West Ham United
The fans are going to be disappointed with the FA Cup Quarter Final exit, although they should be pretty proud of the fight and desire shown by the West Ham United squad. The first half was not the best, but West Ham United still clawed back a 0-2 deficit deep into injury time before eventually being beaten by Leeds United on Penalties last Sunday.
Nuno Espirito Santo did not pick a weak team with this Premier League game in mind and he will be hoping the return to action ahead of most other top flight clubs can stand his side in good stead. The Hammers are 18th in the Premier League table coming out of the March international break, but they are only a point from safety and a win on Friday would put a lot of pressure on the relegation rivals who play later in the weekend. A 3-4-8 home record is not the best for West Ham United who have scored 18 goals and conceded 28 at the London Stadium.
West Ham United have played Extra Time in all of the FA Cup fixtures played this season and that means they have only won 1 of the last 9 games in all competitions in normal time. They are unbeaten in 7 at the London Stadium in all competitions in normal time after fighting back to force Extra Time against Leeds United last Sunday, but 6 of those matches have ended in draws, including each of the last 5 played here.
Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavrapanos are both hoping to be available for selection on Friday, but all eyes are on Crysencio Summerville's availability.
Wolves
It has been almost a month since Wolves last played a competitive fixture and the 2-2 draw at Brentford has dipped the raised hopes that Rob Edwards would help the team find a miracle and survive in the Premier League. Only the most optimistic of Wolves supporters may have really felt that was a possibility, but the March international break may have given them time to really assess the current position.
There are 13 points between Wolves and safety and just seven Premier League games remain, but Edwards and his coaching staff will be targeting avoiding finishing bottom of the table. Improved results have not only seen Wolves surpass Derby County's record low tally, but they are now just 3 points behind Burnley in 19th place. The side have a 0-5-10 away record in the top flight following the fightback to earn a draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, although Wolves have scored just 7 away goals all season.
Wolves have lost 1 of the last 6 Premier League games played and picked up 9 points from a possible 18 in that run. They have drawn 2 of the last 3 away Premier League games, but Wolves were 2-0 down and second best by some distance before rallying for a 2-2 draw at Brentford last time out.
Sam Johnstone is a doubt, but Jose Sa remains first choice goalkeeper anyway.
Head to Head
Wolves have beaten West Ham United twice at Molineux this season and scored three goals in both victories in the League Cup and Premier League.
The London Stadium may not have offered West Ham United the same advantages that they had at Upton Park, but they have beaten Wolves 5 times in a row in this part of East London.
Prediction
Make no mistake, there is a whole heap of pressure on West Ham United shoulders even at a time when they have seemingly been playing much better football than earlier in the campaign.
Nuno Espirito Santo has helped the team tick the Premier League points over and the character shown in the FA Cup Quarter Final will give the manager confidence that The Hammers can avoid a devastating relegation.
Three months ago you would have really worried for West Ham United- they lost to relegation rivals Wolves and Nottingham Forest in January and looked lost.
However, the second of those defeats have sparked the squad and West Ham United will move out of the bottom three with a victory on Friday night before rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United are all in action.
Winning games has not been easy- West Ham United have been ticking points over at home with draws and that has seen them get closer to the positions of safety as Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest have been slumping.
A draw would be seen as a loss this Friday and that is where there is a different pressure on the shoulders of the players.
Wolves arrive as the bottom club and a team that is still lacking the quality that it would have taken to avoid relegation to the Championship. Despite improved results, it is a matter of WHEN, not IF, Wolves are officially relegated from the top flight, but it is those improved results that will give West Ham United fans and players something to think about.
Home wins over Liverpool and Aston Villa and battling draws at Nottingham Forest and Brentford have to be respected, although Rob Edwards will be well aware that the fine margins have landed in favour of his Wolves team. The win over Villa aside, Wolves could have easily lost the other 3 games considering the quality of chances opponents created against them and that is something that has to give West Ham United hope.
The home record against Wolves is another positive, although The Hammers will feel a lot more confident if Crysencio Summerville is back in action.
Nothing is going to come easy for West Ham United, but they can at least point to a number of recent outings at the London Stadium where they have created some very good opportunities. Jarrod Bowen remains a key figure, but there are others who will need to step up and show a bit more composure in the final third to just help West Ham United avoid dropping important points.
Wolves will make things nervous, but they are still a team who are giving up some very good chances and that may be key for West Ham United to beat them for a sixth time in a row at home.
Losing on both visits to Molineux should also focus the West Ham United players to take nothing for granted and the feeling is that The Hammers will pick up a big three points and turn the pressure valve up on those relegation rivals playing later in the weekend.
The hope is that the run of injury time goals that have turned winning selections into losing ones does not continue through to the weekend for the Picks being made.
The Pick :
West Ham United 2-0 Wolves
