His loss is Gary O'Neil's gain and it is this Englishman who will be taking charge when Strasbourg play in the Conference League Semi Final.

They topped the Conference League Group Standings, but Strasbourg have been tested in the Knock Out Stages with a narrow win over Rijeka and having to come back from 2-0 down in the First Leg against Mainz to beat the Bundesliga club 4-0 in the Second Leg. Being in mid-table in the French top flight standings should mean Strasbourg are fully focused on the Conference League and they had won 4 away games in a row in the competition before the defeat to Mainz.

Strasbourg put in a big effort to come from 2-0 down to beat Lorient this past weekend, although they did need two injury time goals to turn things around. The side had lost 3 of the previous 4 games in all competitions, but the win at Lorient means Strasbourg have won 3 of the last 4 in all competitions on their travels.

This is the first time these two clubs are meeting in a competitive fixture.

Prediction

The idea around the Conference League is that it will give 'smaller' clubs an opportunity to win a major trophy, but it has been a competition dominated by the top European Leagues in the main.

A representative from Spain faces one from France in one of the Semi Final ties, but this is a big opportunity for Rayo Vallecano and Strasbourg respectively.

The former have not won a major trophy and Rayo Vallecano operate under the huge shadow casted by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

However, this is a chance to make headlines on their own and Rayo Vallecano have proven to be pretty tough in the Conference League, although inconsistent to say the least. Home form has been really important and it was the big win over AEK Athens that Rayo Vallecano were barely able to hold onto in the Quarter Final and they will certainly be looking to take some kind of lead to France next week.

Strasbourg are a former French title winner, but that was almost fifty years ago and winning this competition may just ease the growing discontent around the model that has this club working with Chelsea. It was that model that saw Liam Rosenior move to Stamford Bridge as manager, but Gary O'Neil has come in and kept the team motivated and pushing in a positive direction.

They were beaten in the First Leg in Germany by Mainz in the Quarter Final, but Strasbourg thumped them at home and they had won all 4 away Conference League games prior to that defeat. Recent form has been a little messier as Strasbourg really turn the attention to finishing as well as they can in the Conference League, but they may have work to do in the Second Leg.

Credit has to be given to the Strasbourg squad for the away results produced in this competition, but they can be a little vulnerable at the back and that may give Rayo Vallecano the impetus to come through with a narrow victory.
