Uzbekistan
After several near misses in World Cup qualification campaigns, Uzbekistan finally made the tournament finals this time around but the White Wolves head into this Group K opener against Colombia on the back of two recent warm-up defeats.
Following qualification after recording a resounding 3-0 win over Qatar in the final round of qualifying, Uzbekistan have been involved in a whole raft of international friendlies, the most recent resulting in disappointing losses at the hands of Canada 2-0 and then Netherlands 2-1 respectively.
During their ultimately successful World Cup qualifying campaign though, Uzbekistan managed to keep a total of seven clean sheets within their last 10 qualifying games although goals may be scarce at the attacking end with captain Eldor Shomurodov shouldering most of the goalscoring burden.
Fast Fact: Uzbekistan reached the World Cup before several traditionally stronger Asian nations such as China despite having a much smaller population and football economy.
Colombia
Despite having had to endure a worrying six-game winless run during their World Cup qualifying campaign in the CONMEBOL section, Colombia nevertheless achieved a creditable 3rd place finish above the likes of Brazil and Uruguay.
Two strong victories against Bolivia 3-0 and a 6-3 win against Venezuela in the final two qualifying matches saw Colombia cross the finish line in emphatic fashion while the bigger picture shows Los Cafeteros have slipped to just two defeats in their last 13 matches overall.
Having collected seven wins within this recent 13-game period, Colombia look the more likely to grab the all-important three points in this opener in Mexico City especially as Nestor Lorenzo’s side possess a decent pedigree on the World Cup stage.
Fast Fact: Colombia played its first World Cup in 1962.
The Betting Verdict
Colombia possess quality European top flight personnel such as Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Luis Suarez and these should influence a Colombian opening win on Wednesday (local time).
