Portugal
Portugal laboured to a disappointing and underwhelming 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opening game in Group K despite the Selecao taking an early 1-0 lead through Joao Neves on only six minutes.
The Portuguese national coach, Roberto Martinez, will now be demanding much more from his side when they line up against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan at the NRG Stadium, especially as their final game in the group phase will be against Colombia.
Since being handed a 2-0 loss away from home at Republic of Ireland towards the end of the World Cup qualifying campaign, Portugal have since put together a solid looking six-match unbeaten sequence which includes picking up four wins in the process against the likes of Armenia, USA, Chile and Nigeria.
Fast Fact: Despite producing world-class talent, Portugal has never reached a World Cup final.
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan face a tough assignment in the shape of Colombia in their first ever match in the World Cup finals as Fabio Cannavaro’s side were dealt a heavy 3-1 loss at the hands of the South American nation and it now looks a long way back for the World cup newcomers as they look to produce an upset against Portugal on Tuesday (local time).
In the lead-up to World Cup 2026, Uzbekistan had slipped to morale-sapping defeats at the hands of Canada 2-0 and Netherlands 2-1 and although they managed to hit the back of the net against the Colombians, these three defeats on the trot do not bode well for the White Wolves.
A lack of exposure on the elite World stage looks set to contribute to further disappointment against Portugal.
Fast Fact: Uzbekistan's qualification for the 2026 World Cup is a historic milestone: it is the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance.
The Betting Verdict
Portugal’s depth in quality should see the Selecao record a comfortable win and a clean sheet.
