PORTUGAL

Portugal find themselves in 5th place in the FIFA rankings ahead of this upcoming World Cup and are favourites to top Group K amongst the other nations such as Colombia, DR Congo and Uzbekistan respectively.

The Selecao finished top of their qualifying Group F by a three-point margin over runners-up Republic of Ireland whom they slipped to a 2-0 loss in Dublin to but managed to redeem themselves with a resounding and crushing 9-1 victory over Armenia in the final game of qualifying.

41 year-old Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead the line for Roberto Martinez’s side while former Manchester United team-mate Bruno Fernandes heads into this tournament in sparkling form having scored 9 goals along with providing 21 assists in the Premier League.

COLOMBIA

13th FIFA ranked nation, Colombia, are expected to be Portugal’s closest rivals for the top spot in Group K despite a worrying six-game winless run during the CONMEBOL qualification which consisted of three draws and three defeats, but Los Cafeteros steadied the ship with subsequent victories against Bolivia and Venezuela which proved pivotal in a 3rd place finish.

The Colombians possess some exciting and dangerous attacking personnel in the shape of Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Luis Suarez, the latter plundering a total of 28 goals in this season’s Primeira Liga.

DR CONGO

A solid defensive unit marshalled by Chancel Mbemba conceded just 7 goals in 13 qualifying games and The Leopards emerged unscathed after being up against Cameroon and Nigeria in the African play-offs before Sebastien Desabre’s side saw off Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off.

UZBEKISTAN

This will be the very first appearance at the World Cup finals for Uzbekistan who have had to endure a few very close misses in the past but although they came runners-up behind Iran only on goal difference during qualification, the White Wolves secured their place in World Cup 2026 thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Qatar in their final qualifying match.

Fabio Cannavaro’s side are expected to adopt a stubborn and cautious approach in the group stage so do not expect fireworks and a glut of goals although they do carry a serious goal threat in the form of captain Eldor Shomurodov who averages a goal in every other game for the White Wolves.
