World Cup News :: FIFA World Cup 2026 – Group E Preview - Germany | Curacao | Ivory Coast | Ecuador
Posted on 2026-06-07 by Niko
Group E looks straightforward at first glance, but there is more intrigue here than the draw initially suggests.
Germany are overwhelming favourites to top the section, yet the battle for second place could be one of the most fascinating in the tournament.
Ecuador and Ivory Coast both possess the athleticism, defensive quality and individual talent to make a deep run, while Curacao arrive as one of the great underdog stories of the World Cup.
The opening clash between Ivory Coast and Ecuador may ultimately decide who joins Germany in the knockout stage. With all three contenders likely targeting maximum points against Curacao, every goal could matter in a potentially tight qualification race.
Germany
Germany arrive at this World Cup carrying a familiar expectation: anything less than a deep run will be viewed as a disappointment. After back-to-back group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, Die Mannschaft finally appear to have regained their identity under Julian Nagelsmann.
The squad combines experienced leaders such as Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer with one of the most exciting young attacking cores in world football. Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are capable of unlocking any defence, while Kai Havertz provides a versatile focal point in attack.
The biggest question is not whether Germany should qualify, but whether they can turn possession dominance into consistent goals against disciplined opponents. On paper, however, they have too much quality for this group. Most bookmakers make them one of the strongest group favourites in the entire tournament, and anything other than first place would be a major surprise.
Likely Formation: 4-2-3-1
Key Player: Jamal Musiala
Top Team Goalscorer Pick: Kai Havertz
Value Pick: Florian Wirtz
Group Winner Odds: Around 1.30 (-300)
Curacao
Every World Cup needs a fairytale, and Curacao provide one of the best stories of 2026. The Caribbean nation is making its first-ever appearance at the tournament and became the smallest country by population to qualify for a World Cup. Their route to North America was built on organisation, resilience and an impressive unbeaten qualifying campaign.
Former Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat has helped create a disciplined side that relies heavily on players developed in the Dutch football system. Leandro Bacuna brings leadership and experience, while Tahith Chong offers pace and creativity in the final third. Realistically, progression would require a major shock, but Curacao have already exceeded expectations and could easily play spoiler in a group where goal difference may become decisive.
Likely Formation: 4-3-3
Key Player: Leandro Bacuna
Top Team Goalscorer Pick: Tahith Chong
Group Winner Odds: Around 125/1 (+12500)
Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and may be one of the most overlooked teams in the competition. The reigning African champions have assembled an impressive blend of physicality, technical quality and attacking pace. Emerse Faé has built a side capable of competing with anyone on its day, and many observers believe the Elephants have the tools to challenge Ecuador for second place.
Franck Kessié remains the heartbeat of the midfield, while players such as Simon Adingra and Sébastien Haller provide genuine attacking threat. Ivory Coast tend to thrive in transition, where their speed and athleticism can overwhelm opponents. Their opening match against Ecuador could effectively become a knockout game, and a victory there would put them in an excellent position to advance.
Likely Formation: 4-3-3
Key Player: Franck Kessié
Top Team Goalscorer Pick: Sébastien Haller
Value Pick: Simon Adingra
Group Winner Odds: Around 7.50 (+650)
Ecuador
Ecuador have quietly become one of South America's most consistent national teams. They finished near the top of CONMEBOL qualifying and arrive with a squad packed with players competing in Europe's strongest leagues. Unlike previous Ecuador sides that relied heavily on energy and work rate, this generation combines athleticism with genuine technical quality.
Moisés Caicedo is the standout name and one of the best midfielders in the tournament outside the traditional favourites. Alongside defenders Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié, he forms the backbone of a team that is extremely difficult to break down. Ecuador may not possess Germany's star power, but they are arguably the most complete side in the race for second place and have enough quality to trouble the group favourites as well.
Likely Formation: 4-3-3
Key Player: Moisés Caicedo
Top Team Goalscorer Pick: Enner Valencia
Value Pick: Kendry Páez
Group Winner Odds: Around 4.50 (+350)
Group Verdict
Germany should win the group. Their attacking talent, tournament pedigree and overall squad depth place them comfortably ahead of the other three nations. The real battle is between Ecuador and Ivory Coast, and it may be one of the closest second-place races in the entire tournament.
Ecuador get the nod because of their balance. Their midfield is stronger, their defensive structure is more reliable, and they have consistently performed against elite opposition throughout South American qualifying.
Ivory Coast are talented enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, while Curacao will hope to leave the tournament with a result that cements their place in World Cup history.
Predicted Final Standings
1. Germany
2. Ecuador
3. Ivory Coast
4. Curacao
Best Bet – Group Winner
Germany to Win Group E @ 1.30 (-300)
Germany possess the deepest squad and the most attacking quality in the group. Barring a major surprise, first place should be theirs.
Value Bet
Ivory Coast to Finish 2nd @ Around 2.90 (+190)
The gap between Ivory Coast and Ecuador is smaller than many markets suggest. If the Elephants win the head-to-head meeting, second place is well within reach.
Group Forecast Germany 1st / Ecuador 2nd
The safest projection, though this feels like a group where Ivory Coast could easily disrupt expectations and turn the final matchday into a tense affair.
