World Cup News :: FIFA World Cup 2026 - Group H Preview - Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay
Posted on 2026-06-07 by Auls
SPAIN
Dominating European Football has been something that Spain have largely continued to do since winning a first major international tournament back at Euro 2008.
The national team have won three of the last five editions of the European Championship and they have won a World Cup and a Nations League trophy in that time as well.
The defending European Champions will head to North America as one of the favourites to win the World Cup, although Spanish fans will be well aware that the team have won just THREE World Cup Finals matches over the last three tournaments since winning it all in South Africa in 2010.
That does make Spain one of two European teams to win the World Cup outside of the continent, but a Group Stage exit followed by back to back Last 16 defeats is not good enough for this national team.
Expectation will be burdened by the squad travelling to North America, but the big doubt about Spain remains the Number Nine position and whether they can score enough goals to beat the best in the Knock Out Rounds of this tournament.
Fifteen goals were scored in seven Euro 2024 Finals matches and that is always going to be the one criticism of Spain who have never really replaced David Villa with the kind of quality that they would have hoped.
There is plenty of quality in this squad, but the pressure will be on Mikel Oyarzabel to put the finishing touches to the football Spain produce, but Spanish fans will believe in the player that scored the winning goal at Euro 2024.
URUGUAY
Uruguay are expected to join Spain from Group G in the Knock Out Rounds without needing to worry about being one of the best third place finishers.
Marcelo Bielsa is the manager and he is going to want his team to play with a high press and plenty of intensity, although that is going to be tested in what could be very hot conditions during the tournament.
The likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have moved on from the national team, but Darwin Nunez will be looking to provide the threat up front and this is a team that is well drilled when it comes to set pieces.
It has been a long time since Uruguay last won the World Cup, but Uruguay are two time World Champions and the last generation once again made them a competitive team at the business end of the Finals.
A Group Stage exit in Qatar will have stung, but Uruguay reached the Semi Final at the Copa America hosted in the United States in 2024 and that will give the team some belief.
This is also a Group that looks pretty weak on paper and Uruguay will be expecting to be in a position to Qualify before facing Spain in the last game.
MINNOWS TO STRUGGLE
The two nations making up this Group are Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde and there is a huge chance that both will be eliminated by the end of this Stage of the tournament.
The number crunchers believe three points will be enough for teams to make it out of the Group Stage as one of the third best finishers, but likely needing a goal difference of minus two at worst.
These nations face one another in the last of the fixtures in this Group, but the damage could potentially have already been done by the two former World Champions in the section.
Saudi Arabia did stun Argentina in the Group Stage in Qatar, but they still failed to make it out of the Group, while Cape Verde are an unknown as they make their debut in the World Cup Finals.
SAUDI ARABIA
Preparation in the Saudi camp has been disrupted with a change of manager and the opening fixture against Uruguay will tell us plenty about how disruptive that has been.
They failed to impress in Qualification, despite the extra places on offer to the Asian Confederation and so have it all to do to replicate the 1994 Saudi Arabia squad that were the first to play at the World Cup Finals and who reached the Knock Out Stage in a tournament hosted by the United States.
CAPE VERDE
Cape Verde are a team that progressed at the expense of Cameroon, but they were beaten 4-1 away from home against that nation in the World Cup Qualifiers, while failing to Qualify for the last African Cup of Nations.
Grit and solid defensive schemes made Cape Verde hard to beat in the World Cup Qualifiers, but this is a nation that have massively overachieved by reaching the tournament Finals this summer and they will do well to win one game.
GROUP SUMMARY
Unsurprisingly Spain and Uruguay are short price favourites to move through to the Knock Out Rounds of the tournament.
You’d have to give Spain the edge when it comes to winning the Group, but that could be decided when Spain and Uruguay meet on Match Day 3 of this Stage.
It looks unlikely to be a Group that provides a potential third placed team moving through with both Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde likely needing an upset against one of the two stronger nations in this Group.
Saudi Arabia did pick up a win over Argentina at the last World Cup, but have not really impressed since then and Cape Verde may upset them for third place.
Most likely dual forecast is a horrible price of Spain-Uruguay at 1.36.
Spain are the more convincing of the nations and it may be better for those looking for a stronger price to back them to finish above Uruguay at 1.80.
The favourites to finish bottom of the Group is Cape Verde, but some may be willing to play the odds against price of Saudi Arabia finishing there instead, although that is a bet that could be made in the win-draw-win market later in the tournament with both teams expected to lose the opening two fixtures.
