A Sports Betting Pick by Stu

Cronulla Sharks v South Sydney Rabbitohs
Rugby League : Australia : NRL 2026
Sunday 2nd August 2026 - KO 1400 AEST

Cronulla Sharks

Cronulla have arguably been the form team of the competition over the past month. Craig Fitzgibbon's side has rediscovered the balance that made them genuine premiership contenders earlier in the season, combining disciplined defence with an attack capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. Their recent 48-point performance against the Sea eagles on their turf highlighted just how dangerous they become when they dominate possession and field position.

Cronulla are placed 4th, 12-6 record and 2 points ahead of the Dolphins and with their current form should comfortably make the top 4. Cronulla have won 4 in a row and have scored 162 points across those 4 matches while only conceding 46.

Everything starts with Nicho Hynes. The Sharks playmaker has returned to his brilliant best, controlling matches through an elite kicking game while also picking the right moments to challenge the defensive line himself. Alongside Braydon Trindall, Cronulla possess one of the most settled halves combinations in the competition, giving them a significant advantage for this match and the remainder of the season.

The Sharks forward pack has become one of the NRL's biggest strengths.
Addin Fonua-Blake has transformed the middle rotation with his powerful carries and offloading ability, while Cameron McInnes continues to set the standard defensively. Briton Nikora remains a constant threat on the edge, and the return of Thomas Hazelton adds even more size and impact through the middle.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

South Sydney arrive knowing this is an opportunity to prove they can challenge the competition's elite away from home. A win keeps the finals hopes alive but a loss here would make for some very nervous moments as the chasing pack of Manly and Canterbury in particular are running into hot form too. The Rabbits are still in the top 8, in 6th despite a shaky last few outings off the back of 10-8 record.

Wayne Bennett's side has shown flashes of brilliance throughout 2026, but injuries have prevented them from fielding their strongest line-up consistently, in particular Latrell Mitchell who is battling a nerve issue in his back and wont be back this season. Despite those setbacks, the Rabbitohs remain one of the competition's most dangerous attacking teams when they complete their sets and generate momentum through the middle.

Keaon Koloamatangi continues to produce representative-quality football, carrying an enormous workload every week. Tatola brings experience and aggression through the middle, while Brandon Smith's energy around dummy-half gives South Sydney a genuine spark whenever the game begins to open up.

The biggest question surrounds the Rabbitohs spine. With ongoing injury concerns affecting several key players during recent weeks, Bennett has again been forced to adjust his combinations. Even so, South Sydney still possess plenty of strike power on the edges, and Alex Johnston remains one of the game's greatest finishers whenever quality ball comes his way.

Odds

Cronulla are firm favourites with the bookies, $1.28 to $3.75, the line 12.5 points and total points is 51.5

The Betting Verdict

The Cronulla Sharks return to Sharks Stadium on Sunday afternoon riding a wave of confidence as they host the South Sydney Rabbitohs in one of the standout matches of Round 22. The Sharks have surged into the top four on the back of four consecutive victories, while South Sydney remain firmly in the finals race despite battling injuries and inconsistency over the past month. With both clubs chasing a favourable finals position, this shapes as a high-quality encounter between two sides that know September football is just around the corner.

Everything points towards Cronulla extending their winning streak. The Sharks are playing with tremendous confidence, their spine is settled, their forward pack is dominating opposition middle thirds, and they're scoring points almost at will. Fitzgibbon has his side completing at a high rate, defending with discipline and capitalising whenever opponents make mistakes.

For Souths, If Koloamatangi, Tatola and Brandon Smith can generate quick ruck speed, the Rabbitohs possess enough strike power out wide to test the Sharks defence. Bennett-coached teams are also renowned for lifting in big games, and South Sydney have already beaten Cronulla once earlier this season in round 10, 36-12 so there is no shortage of belief within the camp. South Sydney have struggled to maintain intensity for the full 80 minutes against the competition's best sides, and that's exactly where Cronulla have excelled. The Sharks continue to build pressure through repeat sets, force opposition errors and then punish teams with clinical finishing.

The key battle will be through the middle. If Addin Fonua-Blake, McInnes and Hazelton establish early dominance, Hynes and Trindall will have the time and space to unleash Cronulla's dangerous outside backs. Conversely, South Sydney must slow the play-the-ball and force the Sharks into an arm wrestle if they are to remain within striking distance.

Overall H2H Sharks lead 24-19 and Cronulla had won 5 in a row over Souths before the earlier season loss. Playing at Sharks Stadium also favours Cronulla, where they've been among the NRL's strongest home teams throughout 2026. Cronulla win 59% at home while the Rabbits are a dismal 6-16 at Shark Park.

Prediction: Cronulla Sharks by 14+

The Pick :

Cronulla Sharks 30-14 South Sydney
