The Bulldogs head into Friday night's clash at Accor Stadium knowing there is very little room for error. Canterbury have suddenly found themselves outside the eight with only four rounds remaining after their 20-18 loss to the Roosters last weekend was particularly painful because they were competitive throughout but couldn't find the finishing plays required to secure the two points.
The Dogs are placed 9th on a 10-10 record and face a club who sits just one win ahead this week, a win is required to stay in the hunt and for Souths, they need to win to create breathing room ahead of a major rival.
Stephen Crichton remains one of their most important players. His leadership, defensive communication and ability to create something from limited opportunities make him particularly valuable in a game of this magnitude. Matt Burton also gives Canterbury an enormous territorial weapon with his kicking game, while Bailey Hayward has developed into an increasingly influential dummy-half.
The forward pack remains one of Canterbury's biggest assets. Max King and Leo Thompson provide the hard metres through the middle, while the recent return of Viliame Kikau and Jacob Preston offer genuine strike on the edges. If the Bulldogs can establish quick play-the-balls, they have enough power and speed to make South Sydney's defence uncomfortable.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
South Sydney arrive at Accor Stadium in a far healthier position after their 28-24 victory over Parramatta last weekend. Placed 7th 11-9 record and 4 matches to play, Souths destiny is in their own hands. That win was particularly important because it came without the luxury of a perfect performance. The Rabbitohs had to withstand periods of pressure before producing enough attacking quality to get over the line. Wayne Bennett will be perfectly happy with that. At this stage of the season, ugly wins are every bit as valuable as spectacular ones.
When their forwards generate momentum, the Rabbitohs can shift the ball quickly and put enormous pressure on defensive edges. Keaon Koloamatangi remains a key figure through the middle and on the edge, while Brandon Smith provides the sort of hard-running, high-work-rate football that allows the more creative players to operate. Souths have already beaten Canterbury earlier this season 32-24, with a major contribution from Latrell Mitchell who is not playing in this match.
That makes the contributions of Cody Walker, Campbell Graham and the other senior players even more important. Souths don't necessarily need one superstar to win this match; they need their experienced players to collectively control the contest.

Canterbury are the more reliable defensive team. They are comfortable playing in low-scoring, territorial contests and have the forward pack to make South Sydney work for every metre. At Accor Stadium, with the season on the line, I expect the Bulldogs to come out aggressively and try to establish dominance early.
