English League Two
2012-01-28 - AFC Wimbledon vs Aldershot Town
A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter
Football – England – League Two
Saturday 28th January 2012 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Improved AFC Wimbledon take on lower half side Aldershot Town on Saturday afternoon with the hosts keen to secure another three points and move into the comfort of a mid-table position.
AFC Wimbledon (15th)
HOME : 4-3-7 21/30
Wimbledon have lifted their game in recent weeks following an alarming twelve game slump in which they suffered nine straight defeats and three draws as their decline down the table was very evident. But a recent three match winning sequence has lifted them out of the relegation danger for now with wins over Port Vale, Gillingham and Macclesfield Town; two of those wins coming away from home incidentally.
The Dons’ home record stands at 4-3-7 21/30, and with the visit of Aldershot Town they have the chance to record back-to-back home wins for the first time since September/October when they beat high-flying Cheltenham Town and Gillingham.
Of the teams situated in the lower half of League Two, Wimbledon have scored the most goals and no wonder with the likes of former Oxford United striker Jack Midson (13 goals, 3 assists) bang in form, scoring five goals in his last five matches, along with creative midfielder Christian Jolley (6 goals, 4 assists), Luke Moore (4 goals, 2 assists), with midfielder Sam Hatton (1 goal, 4 assists) also providing the ammunition.
There is a concern over Wimbledon's defensive capabilities and the fact that they’ve not kept a clean sheet in all home matches so far, but if we just accept that they are once again likely to concede, I am confident that they have the superior firepower over Aldershot to ‘win by one more’ in this fixture.
Aldershot Town (19th)
AWAY : 4-1-8 14/22
Aldershot Town are on a run of six matches without a win and have won just once in their last ten League Two fixtures which now sees them seven points ahead of second from bottom club Dagenham & Redbridge, but manager Dean Holdsworth will want to eradicate this slump in order to avoid the situation turning into something more sinister.
Midfielder Luke Guttridge (4 goals, 2 assists) has left the club by mutual consent and I think The Shots will miss his influence in the middle of the park. Their leading scorer is Daniel Hylton (9 goals, 3 assists), but appears to be carrying the goalscoring load squarely on his shoulders without a lot of support.
The Shots’ away record reads 4-1-8 14/22, and whilst losing their last five on the road consecutively, the alarming stat is that they’ve failed to score in all of those matches; 0-2 at Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town, 0-4 at Port Vale and 0-1 at Gillingham.
The Betting Verdict
I’m fairly confident that Aldershot will score at Wimbledon given the home side’s defensive frailties, but can they keep up with The Dons in the goalscoring department?
I think not, and I’ll go for a straight Dons win here with a possible scoreline of 2-1 or 3-2.
