Turkey
The Turks had a disappointing start to group D, picking up just three points from their opening four games before their fixture against bottom placed Andorra.
Turkey worked hard for the points against minnows Andorra, but they got the job done thanks to Selcuk Inan and Byrak Yilmaz’s first half goals.
Abdullah Avci’s side will now host Hungary in an attempt to reignite their faltering World Cup qualifying campaign, Turkey has the chance to get back in the battle for the second place with a win in Instanbul.
Turkey were unable to break down a tight Romanian defense on their previous home game and were surprised on a counter attack to lose 0-1 in a match played back in October. Another result like that could put an end to their hopes to reach the 2014 World Cup.
Hungary
Hungary had a good opportunity to put some distance between them and second place contender and rivals Romania, but they were unable to pick up the points despite taking the lead twice.
Substitute Alexandru Chipciu denied Hungary the victory with an added time goal to rescue a point for Romania after a poor defensive play from the hosts.
Hungary coped better with the fact that the match was played behind closed doors, but once again the uncertainty from their defense proved to be costly. What’s encouraging though is that Egervari’s side managed to create damage in Romania’s defense quite often during the game.
The Hungarians will now travel to Turkey in an attempt to record their third consecutive victory on the road after the ones over Andorra and Estonia, but playing at Sukru Saracoglu in Istanbul will be nothing like their previous clashes.
The Betting Verdict
Hungary overturned an early deficit in their first clash against Turkey back in October (3-1) to pick up three points after a poor second half display from the Turks.
I expect a different performance from Abdullah Avcı’s side, Turkey can deliver good results when they are playing with their backs against the wall and this surely fits that category, any other result than a win can be considered as a huge blow for their hopes.
Turkey’s got a lot of quality up front with in form Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz in the starting line-up supported by the likes of Umut Bulut, Arda Turan or Nuri Sahin, so I expect them to make some damage in a shaky Hungarian defense.
Hungary should be good for a goal as well, they’ve scored in every one of their last six games on the road which includes a 5-3 loss in Netherlands, so both teams to score should be a good option in this one.
I think Turkey will make the most of their home advantage and will manage to outscore Hungary, but instead of taking them to win I’ll go for at least two goals scored by the home side which is better priced.
