Preview
With the Bundesliga virtually gone, there is the feeling that Borussia Dortmund may rest a few players for the second leg of their Champions League Quarter Final against Malaga to come during the week. However, I think the side will want to build some momentum after picking up a goalless draw in Spain last week and they have every chance to do so against relegation threatened Augsburg.
Borussia Dortmund are 20 points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but they remain on course for a place in the Champions League for next season with the top three in the Division automatically qualifying for the Group stages.
They have remained tough to play in front of their passionate home support where Dortmund are 8-2-3 this season, scoring 32 goals and only conceding 14. Dortmund have won 4 straight games at home in all competitions since the surprising 1-4 loss to Hamburg, and they have scored plenty of goals in that run including a 5-1 win over Freiburg in their last home game.
Dortmund will feel confident they can pick up the three points in this one as they are playing an Augsburg side that are trying their best to get out of the bottom three. Augsburg are currently in the relegation Play Off position, but are 5 points from safety while also being 4 points clear of automatic relegation.
Augsburg were beaten 0-2 at home last weekend, but have certainly been playing better away from home where they have lost just 1 of their last 5 Bundesliga games as well as picking up back to back wins in Werder Bremen and Hamburg. The side have a 3-4-6 record away from home this season, scoring 12 goals and conceding 19.
This is only the second time Augsburg will be visiting the Signal-Iduna Park following a 4-0 loss here last season. Dortmund also recorded a 1-3 away win at Augsburg earlier this season.
Prediction
There will likely be some players rested by the home team, but I expect them to take the Bayern Munich route of using this League game to build momentum ahead of their Champions League game against Malaga.
Bayern thumped Hamburg 9-2 at home before beating Juventus in the Champions League and I think Dortmund are scoring enough goals to win this one by at least 2 goals.
