Two seasons ago, Burnley struggled out of the gate in the Premier League under Vincent Kompany and relegation felt like an inevitability before we reached Christmas. The pre-season outlook for the team this time around wasn't very positive outside of the club, but Scott Parker's team have shown enough in August to believe they can be competitive on their return to the top flight.
In the last Premier League campaign, Burnley won 1 of their opening 13 fixtures and were beaten 11 times, while it took 7 games to earn that opening victory. Last month they were able to beat Sunderland at Turf Moor, while Burnley were seconds away from leaving Old Trafford with a point and those performances will certainly offer some encouragement, although the side are about to embark on a tough set of games before the October international break.
Burnley have lost both away Premier League games played this season, but they have won both fixtures played at Turf Moor against Sunderland in the League and Derby County in the League Cup. They are unbeaten at home in League action since the last fixture played here in the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Connor Roberts and Jordan Beyer could both return to action this weekend.
Liverpool
It has been a very positive month for Liverpool Football Club having moved through August as the only Premier League team with a perfect record and managing to sign Alexander Isak. The manager is going to have some big decisions to make with his forward players, but that is a positive thing for a club competing on four fronts, while the only setback was Crystal Palace's decision to pull the plug on a deal to sign Marc Guehi.
Three Premier League games have been played and all have ended in wins for the defending Champions, but Liverpool will feel that they still have more to give. None of the wins over Bournemouth, Newcastle United or Arsenal have been in dominant style and goals after the 82nd minute have been needed in all, but ultimately the key is that The Reds are top of the early standings with 9 points on the board.
Liverpool are now unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions and the confidence will remain high after the victories put together in August. They ended last season having lost 3 of their last 4 away Premier League games, but Liverpool opened this season by securing a very late 2-3 win at Newcastle United.
Arne Slot has suggested that Alexander Isak will not be ready to start on Sunday having been out of action for much of the pre-season and having limited minutes for Sweden during the international break. Jeremie Frimpong and Curtis Jones are both doubts.

They have been particularly successful when visiting Turf Moor and will be looking for a seventh away win in a row on this ground.
Prediction
They may not have convinced in any of the League matches played, but that must be a worrying sign for the clubs chasing the crown that Liverpool are currently wearing.
Wins over Newcastle United and Arsenal will certainly have kept the confidence high inside the camp and Arne Slot and his players will definitely believe they have more to offer in the weeks and months ahead. At the end of last season, Liverpool were dropping points as the intensity dipped, but they have found a way to win when not at their best in August and that will be noted by those behind them.
Visiting Turf Moor has been very productive for Liverpool in recent times and they will be expected to extend the run to 7 straight victories here at the end of this Sunday fixture.
Liverpool have beaten 5 of the 6 newly promoted clubs away from home over the last couple of seasons, although they had to work hard to win at Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City last season.
Hard work will be needed against Burnley, although there looks to be a clear edge in favour of the Champions.
Scott Parker's team have made a decent enough start to the return to the Premier League, but the manager will know that this is going to be a real test for his players. They almost stole a point from Old Trafford two weeks ago, but the defensive issues were pretty glaring as they were when visiting Tottenham Hotspur.
Playing at Turf Moor may feel more comfortable, especially as Burnley are unbeaten in 24 League games at home, but all of those have been against teams that were playing in the Championship last season. This is the first really big test for Parker and his team at home and it may be tough to contain a Liverpool team that have found goals pretty easy to come by in their opening fixtures.
Burnley will look to sit deep and make things tough, but eventually you would expect Liverpool to wear them down and perhaps put a slight gloss on the final scoreline.
They have not been at their best so far this season, although the attacking numbers have been decent enough, and Liverpool may feel this is the 'easiest' fixture they will have played so far. With that in mind, the players could come out and show a bit more dominance against a Burnley team giving up some big chances and Liverpool can win by at least two goals on the day.
