2010-08-08 - Germinal Beerschot vs Cercle Brugge

Football : Belgium : Jupiler Pro League 2010/2011
Sunday, 8th August 2010 - Kickoff 20:30
Germinal Beerschot
Germinal had a disappointing opening of the season with a 2-1 loss at RC Genk. The team of new manager de Boeck scored the opener after 5 minutes, but the equaliser fell only ten minutes later. In the second half Germinal's level was below average, and it was waiting for a Genk goal. That it fell in the last phase was a blow, but it was a deserved loss.
Defender Mikulic was sent off after a second booking and is suspended, while striker MacDonald is injured. Defender Kagelmacher who is on loan from Real Madrid can probably make his debut.
Now Cercle Brugge is waiting in a home match. A match with prestige, as manager de Boeck came over from Cercle Brugge, and this was a bit problematic move. He had renewed his contract till 2014 in april, but a month later he told the chairman he wanted to spend more time with his children, and that was the reason to leave the club.
Cercle Chairman Schotte holds grudges to this move and made this clear to the press. This match is more then only 3 points at stake.
Cercle Brugge
Cercle was pretty close to qualification to the final Europa League preliminary round, but a late third goal of Anorthosis sealed the deal.
All official matches played so far, 5 already in quite a short period, showed a lack of offensive power compared to last season. A lot of this is caused by the absence of striker Iatchouk who was injured and has returned to the group, but he is probably not fit enough to play a role in this match.
Striker Dominic Foley is likely to return after sitting out on Thursday due to an injury. But he isn't the killer that only needs a chance to score which is what Cercle needs. Same can be said of the midfielders, who lack the real killing instinct.
Captain Viane is set to return as is midfielder Sergeant.
The Betting Verdict
After a tough time travelling to Cyprus another tough task is awaiting Cercle. There are some returning players after injuries, but I doubt they can make an impact as they are going to get a hard time scoring.
Germinal are fresh and are preparing for this match the whole week. A huge advantage in my eyes, also knowing de Boeck really desires a win here.
Furthermore Cercle Brugge are not used to international fixtures, and this being the sixth match since mid-july might mean a little less sharpness as usual. Germinal Beerschot to win as main bet, and a side bet on GB on the handicap.
