World Cup News :: Germany knocked out of World Cup in Russia

Defending champions Germany have been eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage following a 0-2 loss to South Korea, in one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history.

Germany, four four-time winners of the World Cup, crashed out in surprising fashion - conceding two goals in injury time at the end of the match as they pressed for the goal which would have sent them through.

Kim Young-gwon's 92nd-minute goal was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded after a video assistant referee decision as the pass was made by a German defender and not a team mate - to give Korea a late lead which left Germany on the brink of elimination.

Germany were desperate, and four minutes later pushed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into midfield, and when he lost possession in South Korea's half, the Asian side broke quickly and Son Heung-min tapped into an empty net to score the second.

It is the first time since 1938 that West Germany or the unified Germany team has not advanced beyond the first stage of the tournament.
