World Cup News :: Belgium, Croatia, England and France reach World Cup semi-finals - who goes further?

Posted on 2018-07-08 by Gooner

The quarterfinals are over, and there are just four teams left standing at the 2018 World Cup.

Belgium, France, England and Croatia have all reached the semi-finals, and it's probably fair to say that all four have exceeded the expectations of their fans BEFORE a ball was kicked.

So what MIGHT happen from here?

Belgium vs. France - Tuesday night in Saint Petersburg
Arguably these are the two teams who have produced the most creditable performances so far - and the winner of this semi-final will probably be the favourite for the final.

Belgium's so-called golden generation have fallen short in recent tournaments, beating the weaker teams and then falling flat when meeting stronger sides in the knockout stages.

While France were average in their group. scoring just three goals against Australia, Denmark and Peru before teenager Kylian Mbappe led the second round 4-3 dismantling of Argentina in Kazan.

France have the greater pedigree, winners of the world cup in 1998, and recent fianlists in Euro 2016, but it feels that Belgium are the team that seems to have come together at just the right time in Russia.

Gooners Pick : Belgium to edge this semi-final.

Croatia vs. England, Wednesday Night in Moscow
Croatia and England are one game away from the World Cup final after taking a favourable route to reach this stage of the competition.

Three of the four knockout games played so far have needed penalties with England finally winning a spot-kick contest, while Croatia have won two penalty shootouts against Denmark and Russia.

Neither side can be called strong favourites, although England look to to have the key player in Harry Kane, and Croatia's penalty saving hero Danijel Subasic might be absent with a hamstring injury.

Gooners Pick : Draw at 90 minutes - with extra time and maybe penalties needed.

So that's my view - but make sure you check in early next week for detailed match previews from the tipsters in the World Cup Betting page

Good luck.
The Gooner.
