Bookmakers News :: Why sports betting in the US is exploding

Posted on 2021-04-21 by Gooner

May 2021 will mark the third anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn PASPA, which effectively handed each state individual powers over whether it wanted to legalize sports betting or not. Needless to say, many of America’s 50 states have moved to introduce legislation. Some have chosen to only allow in-person wagering, whereas others have gone the whole hog and legalized in-person and online sports betting.

According to the latest data from the state guides on Gamble USA, sports wagering is now allowed in 22 states, with several others queuing up to get in on the action. Here’s a brief overview of where we stand today:

Already got skin in the game
• In-person and online (mobile): NV, NJ, WV, PA, RI, IA, OR, IN, IL, MI, CO, DC, VA
• In-person only: DE, MS, NM, AR, NY, MT, NC
• Mobile-only: NH, TN

Close to opening up shop
• WA, MD, LA, SD, WY, AZ

Moving toward legalizing

A New Era in US Sports Betting

It’s clear to see that there is a massive demand for sports betting in the US, with offshore sportsbooks having operated for over 20 years out of Costa Rica and Curacao, and now 22 states legalized and 8 more in the pipe.

Of course, this isn’t really surprising because millions of Americans are fanatical about football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. Furthermore, there are growing numbers interested in soccer and also esports.

Mobile taking control
Mobile betting has emerged as the preferred choice for most bettors in the US, which is why the majority of states offer this option. It’s been thrust into the mainstream with high-profile deals, including the NFL recently penning a $1 billion, 5-year partnership with FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars Entertainment. This follows FanDuel and the Memphis Grizzlies, and DraftKings and the Philadelphia Eagles both agreeing to multi-year sponsorship deals to become the official betting partners of these franchises.

Differences between online and in-person betting
While the fundamentals of wagering are the same whether you do it in-person or online, there are some notable differences, which are worth considering.

In-person betting takes places at licensed retail sportsbooks that are typically found inside land-based casinos or at race tracks. These betting lounges tend to be kitted out with a wall of television screens featuring all the best US and global sports events. Bettors can relax in comfortable armchairs and enjoy a drink while wagering and watching the match. It all makes for an entertaining experience. Plus, when you land a winner, it’s easy to go up to the kiosk and cash in your winning ticket and get paid.

Understandably, betting in-person is not convenient for everyone, and many patrons want more flexibility, which mobile sports wagering delivers. Here are some of the benefits associated with betting online.

Bonuses and Promotions : It’s expensive to maintain an in-person sportsbook with building costs, utilities and staff all adding to the expense. Operating a mobile sportsbook is considerably cheaper. Of course, staff are required, but there are very few other costs. These savings are passed on to customers in the form of bonuses and promotions, such as welcome offers, free bets and enhanced odds. This gives bettors more value when wagering online.

24/7 Operation : Football is the most popular sport for wagering on in the US, but there are many bettors who like to gamble on Premier League soccer from England and the Champions League. However, these games are often played early in the morning in the US, so visiting a land-based sportsbook is not an option. Online wagering is 24/7, allowing customers to bet on what they want, when they want.

Features : It only takes a couple of taps on your phone to place a bet, which is faster than wagering in-person. For those who like the thrills of live in-game betting, this speed is crucial for them to get the right price. Furthermore, the top mobile betting apps in the US offer cash out, statistics, live scores, and numerous other features to enhance the online wagering experience.
