Manchester United defeated neighbours Manchester City 1-0 despite the dismissal of Cristiano Ronaldo.

United are five points behind the leaders Chelsea and Leverpool after gaining revenge for their two losses to City last season.

The visitors took the lead three minutes before half-time when Wayne Rooney claimed the 100th goal of his club career pouncing on the rebound to push the ball into an empty net after Joe Hart parried Michael Carrick's initial effort.

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the 68th minute, his second booking coming for deliberate handball from an attacking corner but United held on.
