NFL Football News :: NFL Playoff picture complete after week 17 action
Posted on 2008-12-29 by Gooner
Week 17 of the regular season proved to have plenty of action, and a couple of high profile flops, and when the dust settled the playoff action had been set.
The New England Patriots (11-5) are out, despite beating the Buffalo Bills 13-0 and winning their fourth in a row it was not enough to edge out the Miami Dolphins (11-5) who claimed the AFC East title with a 24-17 win over the New York Jets.
The Indianapolis Colts (12-4) beat the Tennessee Titans (13-3) but a 23-0 scoreline but with both teams leaving several starters out, it probably won't be a great pointer to a future clash.
As the fifth-seeded team in the AFC, the Colts need to travel the long route of a wild-card team, beginning Saturday night at San Diego. Third-seeded Miami hosts sixth-seeded Baltimore on Sunday. The top two seeds, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, have a first-round bye.

Over in the NFC, the Carolina Panthers (12-4) claimed the NFC South title, while Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) thrashed NFC East rival Dallas, 44-6, to claim the final wild-card slot.
Meeanwhile Minnesota Vikings (10-6) left it late to beat the New York Giants 20-19 and play their way into the playoff spot, while Carolina (12-4) beat New Orleans.
So the Vikings, as NFC North champs, will play host to the Eagles.
