NFL Football News :: Head Coach Tony Dungy retires after 7 season with Indianapolis Colts

Tony Dungy has retired after seven years as coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and will be replaced by associate coach Jim Caldwell.

Dungy (53) has spent the past five years debating whether to leave football to spend more time with his family. He said he and his wife discussed the decision.

Dungy pondered retirement again last January, but returned after Colts owner Jim Irsay agreed to make Caldwell the eventual successor and offered Dungy the use of a private jet to visit his family in Florida.

"We just felt this was the right time," Dungy said. "Don't shed any tears for me. I got to live a dream most people don't get to live."

In Dungy's 13 seasons as a head coach, including six with Tampa Bay, he has put together a quality career.

He has 148 career wins, including playoffs, and ranks 19th all time in victories. He's the first coach in league history to reach the postseason in 10 consecutive seasons and the only coach to preside over six straight seasons of 12 wins or more.
