Shola Ameobi marked his first start for the Magpies since 21 December with a successful penalty as Newcastle and Sunderland drew 1-1 in an enthralling Tyne-Wear derby.

A frantic end-to-end game could have gone either way, but Ameobi's penalty earned his side a point after Steed Malbranque had fouled Steven Taylor.

Djibril Cisse had scored the opener for Sunderland, the Frenchman beating the offside trap to find the net at the second attempt.

Both sides hit the woodwork chasing the win, but a draw was probably the right result.
