Defending UEFA Cup champions Zenit St Petersburg shook off the rust to win the first leg of their last-32 tie 2-1 against Stuttgart.

One former and one future Bundesliga player helped the Russians defeat the German visitors.

Ex-Bundesliga veteran Szabolcs Huszti gave Zenit the lead after just two minutes before Mario Gomez equalised in the 15th minute.

But Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, who has agreed to transfer to Bayern Munich next season, made it 2-1 two minutes into first-half injury-time.

Both teams had to deal with a very poor pitch and temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius in Russia.
