Champions League News :: Wenger says Arsenal can beat Manchester United in second leg

Arsene Wenger is backing his Arsenal team to deliver the "magnificent performance" required to overturn their 1-0 deficit against Manchester United FC and book a place in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

The Frenchman cited his side's 24-match, five-year unbeaten run at home in the competition as he underlined his conviction they could eliminate the holders and earn a ticket to Rome. "I am very confident that the team will produce a magnificent performance and that we will [qualify]," he said.

"We are playing a home game where we have a very strong record in the Champions League. For many people we are outsiders but I believe we can do it."

Arsenal defeated United 2-1 when the teams met in north London in November and Wenger added: "There is no mission impossible for us. It wouldn't change my belief even if they scored."

Wenger can draw encouragement from the fact Arsenal have not conceded a home goal in the UEFA Champions League this term – and just two in their 13 home games played in 2009 in all competitions.

Wenger said United were stronger and sharper in attack in the first leg, but said this was partly due to their longer preparation time. "This time will be different and I think it will be on our side," he said.

Striker Robin van Persie has recovered from a groin strain and returns to Arsenal's squad. Arsenal's leading scorer this season, has been out since April 18 and is likely to rejoin Togo target man Emmanuel Adebayor up front.

"He is available and he is in the squad," Wenger told reporters on Tuesday.
