Tennis News :: Dinara Safina looks to French Open for first grand slam title

Dinara Safina will look to justify her status as world number one by winning the French Open to claim the first grand slam title of her burgeoning career.

The 23-year-old Russian, who rose to the top of the rankings a month ago, has reached two grand slam finals but is yet to land a Major title.

She lost in straights sets to Ana Ivanovic in last year's French Open and Serena Williams in this year's Australian Open.

However, Safina's recent form which takes in tournament wins in Rome and Madrid this month, suggests she is on the verge of something special at Roland Garros.

"I think if I continue playing like I have been for the last three weeks, I have a very good chance," she said. "I just want to focus one step at a time. I don't know when it (a Major title) will come. Maybe here.

"This year I have played a few more tournaments and I've been playing better than last year. So I'm really looking forward to the start of the French Open."

Safina will begin her campaign with a first-round match against London's Anne Keothavong.
