Tennis News :: Andy Murray wins Queens - makes bookmakers worry about Wimbledon payouts

Andy Murray became the first British player to win the Queen's tournament since Bunny Austin in 1938, and is getting the bookmakers worried.

In beating American James Blake 7-5 6-4 in the final of the AEGON Championship Murray was immediately slashed across the board as punters piled in.

Andy Murray is now 5/2 (3.50) from 3/1 to win Wimbledon with Ladbrokes after his stylish straight-sets victory.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "Murray mania has already started. He was well backed for his home slam even prior to beating Blake. But Sunday's success will just exacerbate that trend."

Roger Federer remains the even money favourite to triumph, while Rafael Nadal is out to 7/2 from 3/1.

Meanwhile Coral Eurobet, who make Murray 11/4 (3.75), are concerned the Scot will make the bookies pay where Henman so often failed.

The firm's spokesman David Stevens said: "For many years Tim Henman carried the Wimbledon hopes, and cash, of the nation's tennis fans, and every year the bookmakers avoided a hammering.

However, Andy Murray has already managed something Henman couldn't by winning at Queen's Club, and he heads to SW19 as the man we fear"

William Hills spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "Murray looks to have everything in his favour going into Wimbledon and at long last the perennial bookie nightmare of a Brit winning the tournament looks probable rather than possible - with its resultant million pound payout."
