Tennis News :: Money piles in on Andy Murray to win Wimbledon at Paddy Power

The odds on Andy Murray winning Wimbledon have been slashed following defending champion Rafa Nadal's injury withdrawal today.

Paddy Power promptly responded to Nadal's withdrawal announcement by cutting Andy Murray's odds from 3/1 to 9/4 (3.25) but the second favourite Murray is only likely to attract even more money from the patriotic punt with his half of the draw now seemingly wide open for a run to the final.

The patriotic punt on Murray could see a nationwide gamble on the Brit in the region of £6 million. So far Paddy Power has taken three times more bets on Murray than the next player – and that's a pretty a significant number when the next player is Roger Federer.

The five-time champion Federer remains favourite, but now 8/11 (1.73)from Evens for a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title with a Federer-Murray final available at 7/4. (2.75)

Murray is just 1/33 to win his first round match against Robert Kendrick on Monday and 3/10 for a straight sets victory.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: "Nadal's withdrawal has a greater impact on Murray than Federer and if we weren’t seeing a big enough patriotic punt before than it’s going to go into overdrive now."
