Preview
The Colorado Rockies (10-10) have split the first two games of the series with the New York Mets (12-9) as they complete their first series of the 2012 season. The Mets levelled the series with a 7-5 win last night, the day after they were shelled for 18 runs.
Johan Santana is sent to the mound for the Mets and will look to build on his last start this season. Santana is 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA so far in 2012, but he gave up just 1 run off 3 hits in 7 innings pitched against the Miami Marlins as the Mets won that 2-1.
The pitcher has only started twice in his career against the Rockies and has already enjoyed plenty of success. He has won both career starts and allowed just 8 hits in 16 innings and is yet to allow a run to Colorado, although he did not pitch against them last season as he recovered from injury.
Colorado will try to counter Santana with their record holding pitcher, Jamie Moyer, who looks to build on becoming the oldest pitcher to win in MLB history. Since that time, Moyer has had another solid outing when allowing just 1 run in 6 innings pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates, although the bullpen blew that performance for him.
Moyer is 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA, while he brings in a 10-6 career record against the Mets and a 3.94 ERA. However, he went just 2-2 with a 7.04 ERA in 7 starts against them while with the Philadelphia Phillies between 2009-10.
Head to Head
The win last night means the New York Mets have won 3 of their last 4 games at Coors Field.
The Rockies had won 5 in a row in the series before this little run for the Mets.
Prediction
Both teams have enjoyed their time at the plate in the series so far, but I think the New York Mets have the edge on the mound and are worth a small interest on the run line.
Johan Santana has enjoyed considerable success against the Rockies in the past, while Jamie Moyer's off-speed and strange looking pitches have been seen, and exploited, by the New York Mets in the recent past.
It could be a fairly high scoring game if the bats continue the way they have been performing in the first two games in the series, but I feel Johan Santana is more likely to keep the opposition quiet so 2.50 on them winning by a couple of runs at least looks decent value.
