The losses had been piling up for the Cleveland Guardians (43-48) and they have fallen into fourth place in the American League Central. However, three wins in a row have given the team some momentum and they will be looking to win at least three of the four game set coming up to offer the team some belief about post-season chances going into the All Star Break.

It certainly helps that this four game set is against Divisional rivals Chicago White Sox (31-62) who are still a team in transition having hit rock bottom last season.

The White Sox snapped a three game losing run of their own by taking the last of a series against the Toronto Blue Jays, but the team continues to struggle. They will give the ball to Jonathan Cannon in this opening game to try and build on the strong pitching shown in the win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday evening.

The sophomore has a 3-7 record and 4.50 ERA in fourteen appearances made this season and twelve of those have been in starts. His rookie season finished with a 5-10 record and 4.49 ERA so there has been some consistency in the numbers, although Jonathan Cannon had to take almost the full month out of action in June to recover from a couple of ailments.

After allowing five runs in consecutive starts at the end of May/early June, Jonathan Cannon was taking out of the starting rotation and it may have helped. In two starts since returning, Cannon has a 1-0 record with a 3.24 ERA and he was able to pitch into the 6th Inning earlier this month.

Jonathan Cannon took the decision loss against the Cleveland Guardians earlier this season when giving up six runs in a little over 5 Innings spent on the mound. He went the same distance in his only start against the Guardians in 2024, but Cannon once again took the decision loss with three earned runs allowed.

Cleveland will counter by handing the ball to Logan Allen who has a 5-7 record and 4.06 ERA in seventeen appearances- sixteen starts- in the Major League this season. He had something like a 'sophomore slump' in 2024 having produced solid numbers in his rookie season, but Allen looks to be on the right road in 2025 in his third season in the Majors.

June was an up and down month for Logan Allen who finished his five starts with a 2-3 record and 4.34 ERA, but he opened July by holding the Detroit Tigers to a single run in 6 Innings thrown. No run support meant taking the decision loss, but Allen's personal performance was very good and that will give him a lot of confidence ahead of the final start before the All Star Break.

He did not factor into the decision, but Logan Allen did not give up a single earned run when pitching against the Chicago White Sox earlier this season. Logan Allen started in this ballpark in May 2024 and he threw 6 Innings without giving up a run to the White Sox and was rewarded with the decision win on the day.

The Guardians swept the three game series played against the Chicago White Sox earlier this season and have beaten them seven times in a row.

Prediction

There looks to be a slight edge on the pitching mound in favour of the road team and the Cleveland Guardians have just picked up some momentum following a sweep of the Houston Astros.

They have been dominating this struggling Divisional rival and can begin this four game set with a victory.
