The race to win the American League West looks like one that will go down to the wire with the top three teams separated by just 4.5 games in early August. There are two ways to earn a spot in the post-season, but winning a Division is obviously more valuable than earning a Wild Card spot and the Seattle Mariners (61-53) will be looking to keep the pressure on the Houston Astros.
They took the opener of this series with the Chicago White Sox (42-71) and the Mariners are playing with some momentum having won four of their last five games played. Winning the opener also meant forcing the White Sox to absorb consecutive defeats, while Seattle were able to move past the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card positions too.
After a strong showing in his last start, George Kirby will head to the mound for the Mariners with plenty of confidence as he continues to rally from a tough start to the season. The pitcher has a 6-5 record and 4.13 ERA in thirteen starts in 2025, but he continues to pull down that ERA having kept the Texas Rangers off the scoreboard in 6 Innings thrown last time out.
That means George Kirby has factored into the decision in each of his last seven starts- he is 5-2 in that time with a 2.61 ERA and so confidence is not going to be much of an issue.
He has yet to face the Chicago White Sox in 2025, but George Kirby did keep them scoreless in 7 completed Innings thrown last season.
The White Sox will counter by handing the ball to Jonathan Cannon who has a 4-8 record and 4.77 ERA in eighteen appearances in his sophomore season in the Major League. Sixteen of those appearances have been in starts and Cannon has been a streaky performer on the mound.
In four consecutive starts between June and July, Jonathan Cannon put together a 2-0 record and 2.66 ERA, but sustaining that level has been tough. The two most recent starts has seen Cannon give up eleven earned runs in a little over 10 Innings thrown, although the Chicago batting lineup have prevented him from being handed the decision loss both times.
Jonathan Cannon will take confidence from the fact he gave up a single run in 7 Innings thrown against the Seattle Mariners in his rookie season, but he is facing a new look batting lineup for the first time in 2025.
Following the win on Tuesday, Seattle have won six of the last seven against the Chicago White Sox, including taking three of four this season.
Prediction
You can never quite tell what you are going to get from a sophomore pitcher and Jonathan Cannon has been a little hit or miss for much of the season.
The White Sox will need a good performance if George Kirby continues playing at his current level for the Seattle Mariners.
There have also been one or two signs that the Mariners batting lineup are really warming up having scored eight runs in the opener of this series. They can back up Kirby and help Seattle keep the pressure on their Divisional rivals by winning this game and likely by at least a two run margin.
