It has been a solid start to August for the Major League Baseball picks, but this is a tough sport and every day can feel very different.
Putting together winning streaks when picking games is difficult, but putting them together on the field is even tougher and so all credit has to be given to the Cleveland Guardians (61-55) who have won five in a row. In fact the team have won nine of the last ten games played and that has seen them change mindset from one potentially thinking about 2026 to one that is chasing a Playoff spot in 2025.
Sweeping any series is always challenging, but doing so against a Divisional rival is that much more and this is the test set for the Cleveland players on Sunday. They have scored twelve runs in beating the Chicago White Sox (42-75) twice in a row and forcing the struggling American League Central team to absorb a sixth straight loss.
Chicago will look to change things around when giving the ball to Davis Martin who has a 3-9 record and 4.11 ERA in seventeen appearances this season and sixteen of those have been in starts. This is already the most starts Martin has made in a single season, while the ERA is improved compared with his previous two Major League years, and that is all a positive for a White Sox team in a deep transition.
An injury forced Davis Martin to spend a month on the sidelines between June and July, but his numbers have been similar since returning as the starts just before being sat down. Over the last six starts, Martin has a 1-4 record with a 5.35 ERA and he was knocked around for five earned runs in 5 Innings pitched in his first start in August.
He has yet to face the Cleveland Guardians in 2025, although Davis Martin only lasted 3 Innings when allowing five runs against this Divisional rival in September last year.
The Guardians will counter by handing the ball to Slade Cecconi who has a 5-4 record and 3.72 ERA in his fourteen starts made this season. It has been a real boost for Cecconi to arrive in Cleveland having struggled in his first two years in the Major League with the Arizona Diamondbacks and there has been a confidence about the pitcher which has bolstered the starting rotation.
Slade Cecconi is unbeaten in five starts for the Cleveland Guardians, although he can be thankful to the batting lineup for that. During that run, the ERA is slightly higher than his overall season numbers so there is some room for improvement on the mound, while the Guardians bullpen are also ready to offer plenty of support.
This will be the first time Slade Cecconi has started against the Chicago White Sox and he will be tasked with helping Cleveland make it five wins in a row against this rival.
Prediction
Streaks are very difficult to maintain in a Major League Baseball schedule that is pretty relentless from March through to October.
Right now, the Cleveland Guardians are playing with a lot of momentum though and they can get the better of the Chicago White Sox again.
The batting lineup are pretty hot and the White Sox have just dropped into a slump again, which gives the motoring Guardians the edge.
