Two teams will be looking to close out June in a positive manner in their bid to just get this season turned back around moving into July. Both have laid a strong foundation for success over the coming months in what is a bounce back year, but the long regular season has a way of taking its toll on teams and players and moving through slumps as quickly is possible key.
Despite the recent setbacks, the Atlanta Braves (49-33) continue to lead the National League East even if that lead has been whittled down by the Philadelphia Phillies. The players have to remember the position they have gotten into, although six losses in seven games is a blow for the Braves.
They are hosting the St Louis Cardinals (43-38) who are still firmly in the midst of any Wild Card race, but who have fallen to 7.5 games out of the lead in the National League Central.
Last time out, the Cardinals did snap a four game losing run, but both teams have been struggling in the batting lineup and that will put pressure on the two starting pitchers. While they will believe the struggling hitters may not be able to hurt them, it will also be clear that their own batting lineup may not be able to protect a poor outing on the mound and that does place an extra burden on the pitchers that will be heading out for this game.
The Braves will hand the ball to Martin Perez who has a 6-4 record and 3.00 ERA in sixteen appearances this season with the veteran making twelve starts. The last couple of years has seen Martin Perez falling out of favour with Managers, but his arrival in Atlanta has sparked a positivity and the experience is likely going to be important in the weeks and months ahead.
Martin Perez has a 3.75 ERA in his last seven appearances for the Atlanta Braves, which have all been in starts, and he had a 4-0 record with a 2.95 ERA until allowing three runs in 4 Innings in the last start made.
It will be Matthew Liberatore who will be handed the ball by the St Louis Cardinals to counter, but the younger pitcher has had his issues with consistency. He holds a 3-5 record with a 5.56 ERA in sixteen starts for the Cardinals in 2026 and Matthew Liberatore will need to improve in the second half of the regular season to avoid putting his worst ERA record on the board in his Major League career.
June has proven to be a really tough month for Matthew Liberatore who has a 0-2 record and 10.34 ERA in four starts made. In those outings, he has only once pitched into the Sixth Inning and Liberatore has allowed at least three earned runs in each.
He began June by allowing three runs and Matthew Liberatore has followed by giving up four runs in the next start, five in the next one and six most recently to the Arizona Diamondbacks. That last start was the one that went the longest, but Matthew Liberatore will be concerned about the numbers.
Last year, Matthew Liberatore gave up six runs in 3 Innings against the Atlanta Braves.
This is the first meeting between these National League rivals in 2026- the Atlanta Braves won four of six played last year.
Prediction
The two batting lineups have been struggling and that makes the game a little harder to call.
However, the Atlanta Braves look to have a veteran pitcher in decent form compared with Matthew Liberatore of the St Louis Cardinals.
That could be key to the final outcome and the Braves can pick up an opening win in this series.
