This feels like an important series for the Cleveland Guardians (61-65) who are looking to build up some momentum for a strong end to the regular season. They took advantage on Tuesday with a crushing win, but there is a real concern that Jo Adell is set for a spell on the sidelines and that will be a huge blow to the batting lineup.
On Wednesday, this inter-League series continues with the San Francisco Giants (51-74) who have long turned the attention to the 2027 season.
With that being said, the Giants are going to begin to take a look at some of the prospects that they can call up to the Major League and one of those will be given the start in the middle of the three game set.
There will be a lot of eyes on Matt Wilkinson to see how his game handles the Major League after stumping many batters in the Minors. He arrived in San Francisco in a trade from the Cleveland Guardians and that may allow Wilkinson to settle into his debut in the big Leagues.
Matt Wilkinson had a 5.15 ERA at Triple A level, but there is still a lot of attention as to how 'Tugboat' will handle the step up to the Major League.
It could take the Guardians a bit of time to get to grips with the rookie making his debut, but they will remain confident in backing up the opening win if they can force the San Francisco Giants to dip into the bullpen as early as possible. Adding to the confidence will be the fact that the Cleveland Guardians will be much more comfortable with what to expect from their own young pitcher heading out for another start.
Parker Messick has a 9-7 record and 2.59 ERA in twenty-four starts made in his sophomore year in the Major League and he is looking like a pitcher that can improve on the solid 2.72 ERA produced in his rookie campaign. More impressive is the fact that Messick only made seven starts and he has dropped the ERA while also having a lot more time spent on the mound.
He may have a 2-2 record in the last seven starts for the Cleveland Guardians, but Parker Messick is doing his part to give his team an opportunity to win games. During that run, Messick has not allowed more than two runs in any single start and his 1.96 ERA and ability to move into the 6th Inning more often than not has to be respected.
This will be the first time Parker Messick has faced the San Francisco Giants, but he has excelled in inter-League outings.
Prediction
The Cleveland batting lineup got going pretty quickly on Tuesday and they coasted to a comfortable win and there is plenty of reason to believe they can win this game by a minimum of a couple of runs.
Parker Messick will give them every chance and can contain much of the early impact that the San Francisco Giants can produce at the plate.
There is some uncertainty as to what to expect from Matt Wilkinson making his debut in the Major League, but the Guardians may feel they can force the rookie out and get after the San Francisco bullpen.
If they can, the Cleveland Guardians can maintain some momentum with another relatively comfortable win.
