Five of the six American League Playoff spots have been locked up, although there are still some teams jockeying for final Seedings. The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are still fighting it out to secure the American League West and the Number 3 Seed and it is becoming increasingly likely that the winner of that Division will be the first to reach the post-season with a losing record.
The Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are all locked in as the Number 1, 4 and 5 Seed respectively and the American League East is going to face off against one another until the American League Championship Series.
That leaves the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox (83-77) fighting it out for the Number 2 Seed courtesy of winning the American League Central. There is a big carrot for that Division Winner with a spot directly into the Divisional Round of the Playoffs, while the Runner Up is going to be given the Number 6 Seed and have to win a Wild Card Series at the home of the American League West Champion.
Only 1 game separates the White Sox behind the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago hold the tie-breaker and so will be looking to win the remaining two games in the regular season and hope for a favour to break their way. The White Sox have won five of the last six games, including the opener of this series, but the Guardians are doing just enough to keep their noses in front.
All the White Sox can do is concentrate on winning games and they are facing a Colorado Rockies (57-103) who have lost five in a row.
However, the Rockies will be sending Jose Quintana out to the mound for this game with the main headline being the pitcher trying to throw a spanner in the works for the team that took him into the Major League. Jose Quintana played his first five full seasons in the Major League with the White Sox before being traded to the Chicago Cubs and so he will be very familiar pitching in this City.
2026 has been an injury hit year for the veteran who has made just ten starts for the Colorado Rockies and has a 2-3 record and 5.40 ERA. Jose Quintana had not pitched since the end of May before returning this month to restrict the Seattle Mariners to three runs in 4 Innings thrown.
He has pitched well against the Chicago White Sox in the past, but Jose Quintana has not faced this former team since 2024 and will be under pressure to keep the Rockies in this game early on.
That pressure comes from having Davis Martin head to the mound for the White Sox with his 9-7 record and 3.84 ERA from twenty-eight appearances made this season. Twenty-seven have been as a starter and Davis Martin has returned in September from an extended break between starts to put together a 0.89 ERA in four appearances that have covered over 20 Innings.
Davis Martin is very unfortunate to have a 0-1 record from those four appearances, but will be pitching with confidence considering his personal level being produced. This is the first time he will be facing the Colorado Rockies in his relatively young Major League career.
Prediction
The Chicago White Sox continue to try and exert the pressure on the Cleveland Guardians that may eventually see them win the American League Central, but there is also pressure on the White Sox shoulders.
They know they need to win out and Davis Martin can at least set the foundation from which they can beat the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.
Jose Quintana is a very familiar face in Chicago, but the veteran has had a tough season and may not be able to keep the Rockies competitive enough for long enough and that may allow the White Sox to secure another relatively comfortable win.
