Fans of the Connecticut Huskies that have been keeping tabs with the NCAA Tournament Picks may feel the writer for these pages has something against the team, but that really is not the case.
Even the most ardent of fans has to accept that the Huskies have outperformed all expectations to return to the National Championship Game in the bid to win a seventh title. All of those titles have been won since 1999 and Connecticut will feel they have created a dynasty by winning a third title in four years if they can upset the odds one more time.
They are facing a rampant Michigan Wolverines team that just tore apart the Arizona Wildcats and made them look like anything but a 36-1 team. Even Wildcats Head Coach Tommy Lloyd admitted his team had not faced an opponent like the Wolverines all season and another big win produced by Michigan will have given the team a lot of confidence.
History can be difficult to overcome, even when a team has nothing to do with previous failings- the Michigan Wolverines will be playing in an eighth NCAA Championship Game, but they are 1-6 in the previous seven and have not won the title since 1989.
Four of those NCAA Championship Game defeats have come since the one and only title win and so there is some real pressure being placed on the shoulders of this group.
No matter how dominant they have been, the Wolverines will be well aware that they are going to be judged on this Championship Game and nothing else.
That will be something that the players will have to address and they will certainly have plenty of respect for the Connecticut Huskies who have played strong Defense throughout this run. Shutting down the powerful Illinois Offensive unit will have given them another shot of confidence having done the same in the second half fightback to knock off the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight Round.
Unlike the Wolverines, the Huskies know what it takes to get over the line and cut down the nets on the final day of the NCAA Basketball season.
Connecticut have also never lost the NCAA Championship Game and that could become a big factor if this is close down the stretch.
The Wolverines will be hoping Yaxel Lendeborg can battle through the pain one more time having been banged up in the Final Four win over Arizona and not looking at full health in the second half.
If he is able to suit up, everything on paper points towards the Michigan Wolverines having too much- they will have to deal with the pressure and the history, but Michigan have looked so strong throughout this NCAA Tournament run.
Of course credit has to be given to the Connecticut Huskies for finding a way to grind to wins where they have needed to do that and Head Coach Dan Hurley's experience could be crucial. His team have done enough on both sides of the court when it matters, but Michigan have been good for their backers in the Tournament and they may just end an almost forty year wait to finally be called Champions again.
Prediction
The Connecticut Huskies have continued to upset the odds throughout this unexpected run to the NCAA Championship Game.
They have to be respected- history has shown the Huskies regularly find a way to do what is needed to win Championships and upsetting the odds is not something they are afraid to do.
However, the Michigan Wolverines have crushed all opponents by dominating at both ends of the court and they can do enough to pull away in the second half for a win and cover.
Doing so will turn around the way people have seen the Wolverines since winning the 1989 Championship and they can put an exclamation point on what has been a stunning season.
The Pick :
Connecticut Huskies 70-81 Michigan Wolverines
