PREVIEW
Recent history shows this is a game that will not bring many goals, as the last 3 matches between the Black Cats and the Cottagers has produced just 1 goal. I think that might change here.
Sunderland have had problems scoring against Fulham, failing to find the net in their last 5 league meetings. In fact, they have scored just 6 in 15 league meetings, so have just 3 wins in that time.
Fulham are again proving stingy, hardly giving up any goals. A resurgent Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at home, and a suddenly hot Wigan that had posted a number of upsets were also held to just 1 goal, and beaten 2-1. Fulham were once again in good form defensively, blanking Liverpool in Anfield to record their first win there. Norwich were beaten 2-1 and Bolton were thumped 3-0 away.
From that we can see that when Fulham are home, against a weak side, they have a fantastic chance at scoring a few goals. I realise Sunderland have given up 43 goals in 36 games, but Fulhams home scoring record is very encouraging, with the Cottagers averaging 1.88 at Craven Cottage.
Fulham have also improved in recent games. Their home record reads 9 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses, but if you look back over their last 9 home games, you will find just 1 loss. Sunderland have now gone 6 games without a win, but encouragingly they have drawn 5 of them.
At home, Fulham are always a handful, and then tend to rescue points from losing positions. Before they pegged Chelsea back here to 1-1 they overturned a deficit to beat Arsenal 2-1. Their 12 points salvaged at home is the best of any team in the league.
Fulham may have only kept 1 clean sheet in their last 10 Premier League home games, but they are obviously avoiding defeat because they are scoring more in recent games.
Sunderland may have avoided defeat but really when you think about it, 0-0 draws with Aston Villa and Wolverhampton are nothing to be proud of, as most teams can score on them. Away from home they have conceded 4 to Everton and 3 up at Manchester City.
Fulham will have chances to score a few and win this, if they can only restrict Sunderland to 1 or no goals.
BETTING VERDICT
I was thinking of Fulham to score at least 2 but I think I will take them to win on the AH as the price is better.
