Spain
Eighteen years ago, Spain's national team won a major international tournament for the second time when successful at Euro 2008, although it was a tournament won with many more competitors compared with the 1964 European Championship. They followed up by winning the World Cup for the first time in 2010 in a period of dominance and that is the challenge set out for this squad who arrive in North America as the defending European Champions.
Long considered to be an underachiever on the international stage, Spain are once again playing as one of the favourites and they are one of two European nations who have won the World Cup outside of their own continent. That will give Spain confidence having breezed through Qualifying, but there is also pressure on the squad knowing how poorly Spain have performed at recent World Cup Finals since winning the famous trophy in 2010.
Spain have had mixed friendly results since Qualifying for the World Cup Finals with draws against the likes of Egypt and Iraq surrounded by wins over Serbia and Peru. They Qualified from a Group containing Turkiye, Georgia and Bulgaria without losing a fixture and Spain were unbeaten in normal time in the last Nations League tournament and Euro 2024.
Do You Know... Spain have won just three World Cup Finals matches since beating the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup Final and have failed to reach the Quarter Final at any of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Finals.
Both Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have been back in training for Spain.
Predicted Line Up: Simon, Porro, Cucurella, Cubarsi, Laporte, Rodri, Pedri, Fabian Ruiz, Yamal, Williams and Oyarzabel (4-3-3)
Cape Verde
All forty-eight teams competing in North America this summer are going to be proud of getting to the World Cup Finals, but clearly some will have much bigger expectations than others. One of the debutants are Cape Verde, who upset Cameroon in the African World Cup Qualifiers, and they will already feel they have overachieved by competing in the Finals tournament.
That does not mean they are going to just enjoy the occasion, but Cape Verde will have some expectations of trying to earn another upset or two in order to reach the Last 32. The national team did not play in the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, but Cape Verde did reach the Quarter Final in 2023 of that continental tournament and they deserve respect.
Cape Verde have lost 1 of the last 16 games in all competitions in normal time and they did beat a much changed Serbia 3-0 in an international friendly at the end of May. During the last World Cup Qualifying Group, Cape Verde were only beaten once in 10 Qualifiers played, although that was a 4-1 thumping at Cameroon.
Do You Know... Cape Verde are one of four debutants at the 2026 World Cup Finals, despite an expanded field, and the only debutant from the African Qualifiers.
Predicted Line Up: Vozinha, Moreira, Joao Paolo, Costa, Pico, Pina, Duarte, Monteiro, Cabral, Mendes and Livramento (4-2-3-1)
Head to Head
This is the first competitive fixture between these nations.
Prediction
These two nations will be competing with very different expectations and the Midday local time kickoff is perhaps going to be the most challenging aspect of the fixture as far as Spain are concerned.
It could be hot and humid, but Spain should control the ball and ultimately wear down debutants Cape Verde.
The African Qualifiers have simply not been accustomed to facing teams of the quality of Spain on any regular basis and this could be a painful lesson at times.
Cape Verde have nothing to lose and finishing above Cameroon to reach North America is to be respected, but they were beaten 4-1 in the away Qualifier and containing this Spanish attack could be very difficult.
Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are both expected to be available and Spain have depth off the bench, while there is a real desire to finish top of this Group and avoid a potentially very difficult fixture against Argentina in the Last 32.
Opening games at the World Cup can be difficult to predict, but Spain look capable of winning and covering this Asian Handicap line, even at the inflated mark. An early goal could set them on their way and the current European Champions may wear down Cape Verde and add a gloss to the final scoreline as the latter potentially tire late on.
