PREVIEW
On Friday Euro 2012 kicks off with host nation Poland facing Greece. The first bet that leapt to mind was the Under here as both teams tend to play well defensively and have seen their games end with low scores. That option has been priced down too far to bother with though, and I feel the value is in picking a side here.
Group A is completed by Russia and the Czech Republic, who play the other game of the day. Poland have done well coming into this, so have a great chance of finishing at least 2nd and going through. It would of course be great for the tournament. The Poles have not lost in 5 home games, with 4 wins. Andorra were thrashed 4-0 in their last home match but the other 3 wins were all by the slimmest of margins, 1-0, 1-0 and 2-1 over Slovakia, Latvia and Hungary.
Looking back at Greek results I see they won their last match 1-0 over Armenia but before that they have failed to win 4 in a row. Their last match clean sheet was a welcome too, as they conceded in all 5 games before then. Poland boast a strong attack led by Lewandowski, who led his club Dortmund to the Bundesliga title with 22 goals. There is chemistry here too, as he will play along side 3 other players from his club who scored 13 between them in the German season.
The defence sees a familiar face for us English League followers. Szczesny, the Arsenal goalkeeper, will be tasked with keeping the Greeks out in the opener. It's encouraging that Poland have been able to trust him, with the 2nd generation stopper keeping clean sheets in his last 4 matches.
BETTING VERDICT
I really feel its worth looking at Poland to win to nil, or to take them to win by a 1 goal margin. There are big prices available and it's seriously worth considering. For my official pick here, let's grab the rather generous prices on the home win. Poland should start things off well and I see them winning 1-0.
The Pick :
