PREVIEW
Both the #12 ranked Texas Longhorns and their hosts, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have been resting with bye weeks last Saturday. They'll be fresh as daisies ready for this one, their Big 12 conference play opener.
Texas were impressive in their win over Mississippi a couple of weeks back, taking it 66-31 to get to 3-0 for the season. Impressive final win, but I really like Oklahoma State, who are looking to defend their Big 12 crown. Oklahoma ruined Savannah State 84-0 in their opener but then got upset by Arizona 59-38. The bounceback was encouraging, with the Cowboys then routing Louisiana 65-24 before their bye week.
Oklahoma State are now the highest scoring team in the nation despite their 2-1 start. They have put up an average of 62 points and their average yardage of 683 per game is also tops in the country. There was an issue with starting QB Wes Lunt, who was replaced by JW Walsh, but he was brilliant, throwing for 347 yards on just 30 passes, over 11.5 yards per pass! The thing is, this team can rush the football too, and I'm not sure Texas can stop them. Joseph Randle now has 335 yards after going for over 100 yards in each of his 3 games and entered the end zone with the football 4 times.
David Ash is looking good as Texas QB, throwing 7 TD passes without an interception. I'm not saying Oklahoma State look like they can stop Texas down, I just have enough faith in the Cowboys to keep the chains moving themselves as they have a very good balance offence. The rushing game is proven, and the passing game is not being taken seriously enough. The Cowboys have now scored 30 or more points in their last 21 games, the longest such streak in the country.
Oklahoma have won 8 straight home games now, and can equal their school record with a win over Texas, not that that is their main motivation here, this could really decide the conference if they're not careful.
BETTING VERDICT
I don't trust Texas to be able to stop Oklahoma State, who will surely gain yardage on the ground, but have a QB in Walsh that I believe will do the business and is being undervalued. They are 2.5 point underdogs, which is nice but I am going to go with the Cowboys to win this one outright.
