19th placed Oldham Athletic take on play-off candidates Brentford at Boundary Park on Saturday afternoon with both sides looking to take all three points for differing reasons.

Firstly, Oldham Athletic are just two places and five points above relegation threatened Scunthorpe United and they’ll be keen to pull away from any immediate relegation dangers and end their five match sequence without a win by recording a much-needed success here today. Recent straight defeats to Swindon Town 0-2, Yeovil Town 1-4, Doncaster Rovers 1-2 and Crewe Alexandra 1-2 along with a 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe United means that The Latics are still occupying a place in the lower half of League One.

Oldham’s home form hasn’t been any better with five defeats in their last six home matches, their only success was a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town, but take into consideration that The Shrews have won only once on the road all season! Oldham’s home record then stands at 3-3-7 13/16 and goals have been hard to come by at Boundary Park with only Hartlepool United (8) and Bury (12) scoring fewer home goals than them in the division.

Oldham have also kept only two clean sheets in their last seventeen home matches which obviously gives Brentford a great opportunity to nick the points here today.

Onto Brentford then, and the London club are currently in fourth place four points behind Doncaster Rovers who are in one of the automatic promotion spots.

Brentford will no doubt be keen to close the gap on Rovers and with their recent form they stand every chance of doing so; recent strong wins over Swindon Town 1-0, Sheffield United 2-0 and MK Dons 3-2 along with wins over Notts County and Colchester United have placed them in a solid position to make a serious tilt at automatic promotion this season.

Away from home, Brentford are unbeaten in their last six matches and they’ve kept four clean sheets so far this season. The Bees’ away record stands at 4-7-2 15/12 and they also possess a certain Clayton Donaldson who has scored 7 goals in his last 10 matches and he may well be the key again this afternoon.

THE BETTING VERDICT:

Oldham’s poor recent form and confidence must be a factor here and with Brentford striving for an automatic promotion place I’ll back the visitors here with the handicap and they could win this one 2-1.
