Despite failing to win any of their last four matches in Serie A, Wednesday evening’s hosts, Sassuolo, will still feel confident that they can bounce back with all three points when Serie A strugglers, Genoa, visit their MAPEI Stadium.
Sassuolo had seemingly been on course for a possible top six finish in the Italian top flight following an impressive four-match winning streak from the start of July which included victories over Fiorentina, Lecce, Bologna and most impressive of all, a 2-1 win away from home at Lazio.
However, the hosts were unable to maintain this momentum and their progress was stalled by back-to-back draws with Juventus and Cagliari, which in normal circumstances would have been regarded as solid results, but vital ground was lost.
Further bad news followed as Sassuolo then suffered back-to-back defeats against AC Milan and Napoli which ultimately put paid to any lingering hopes of a possible European spot for next season, so Sassuolo are left with looking to hold onto their current position of 8th on the Serie A ladder.
Genoa possess a valuable four-point cushion above the relegation zone and third from bottom outfit, Lecce, prior to these midweek fixtures in Serie A, and even a point may be enough to secure their Italian top flight status for another season as Lecce have to travel to Udinese in what looks a tricky fixture for the relegation candidates.
Mathematically though, Genoa are still not yet out of the woods in terms of possible relegation so this upcoming trip to 8th placed Sassuolo takes on even more importance as the visitors also look to bounce back from defeat on the weekend in the shape of a heavy 3-0 loss at home to Inter Milan.
That defeat to Inter Milan halted recent back-to-back wins for Genoa who had previously picked up vital wins against Lecce and Sampdoria, while results away from home have been encouraging for the visitors in recent times.
Having lost just once in their last eight matches on the road will give Genoa manager, Davide Nicola, and his side belief that they can pick up something from this encounter as they’ve picked up wins on their travels at Bologna, AC Milan and Sampdoria and they’re now fighting for Serie A survival.
The Betting Verdict
Sassuolo will be keen to halt their ordinary run of results while Genoa know a result here would almost certainly ensure their safety, so both teams to score looks likely.
