The Maracana in Rio de Janeiro will provide the backdrop to this upcoming final in the Copa America which, rather predictably, features the clash between Argentina and Brazil as the two South American nations slug it out for the title.
Argentina finished top of Group A with three wins and draw giving them a three-point cushion over runners-up, Uruguay, and although they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chile in their opening game of the group stage, Argentina bounced back and won their subsequent three group games on the trot.
Wins against Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia, the latter a 4-1 romp, saw Argentina safely through to the knockout rounds where they despatched Ecuador 3-0 in the quarter-finals, but they came up against stubborn opposition in the shape of Colombia in the semi-finals.
Argentina eventually scraped through on penalties after the scores were level at 1-1 after normal time, but that result extended Argentina’s unbeaten run to 19 matches in all competitions.
Brazil also topped their respective Group B by the same method of three wins and a draw but the other way around as the host nation recorded three wins on the trot to start off, as they secured victories over Venezuela, Peru and Colombia respectively.
A 1-1 draw with Ecuador was disappointing but brazil had already qualified for the knockout stage by then anyway and the result became inconsequential as Brazil then safely negotiated their way through the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Chile and saw off Peru by the same result in the semi-finals.
Brazil are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches in all competitions which also includes 10 clean sheets, so they’ll be tough to break down here I suspect.
The Betting Verdict
Both Argentina and Brazil finished top of their respective groups and have barely had to shift through the gears to reach this final.
With three of the previous four meetings between these two nations being international friendlies, and the last encounter being two years ago, there’s not much to go on in terms of an indication of the outcome here.
But this should be a tight game with both Argentina and Brazil giving nothing away and a draw at the end of normal time looks a decent prospect.
