The French Ligue 1 action continues on Sunday evening and features the clash between Saint-Etienne and Lyon as the hosts seek a way out of their early Ligue 1 nightmare this season with the home side sitting bottom of the division.
Saint-Etienne started the new season in reasonable fashion as the hosts picked up points in draws with Lorient, Lens and Lille in 1-1, 2-2 and 1-1 stalemates respectively but this is where their season has since imploded.
Five defeats on the trot has resulted in Saint-Etienne plummeting to the bottom of Ligue 1 following losses incurred against Marseille, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Monaco and Nice, the latter being a heavy 3-0 loss at home last weekend.
The bigger picture shows that Saint-Etienne have managed to pick up just two wins out of their last 14 matches overall in the French top flight, while results at home have also seen a familiar lean period where the hosts have managed to win just three of their last 21 matches.
In addition, Saint-Etienne have lost each of the previous three meetings against Lyon and this trend looks set to continue on Sunday evening.
Lyon continue to hover on the fringes of the top five in Ligue 1 as the visitors currently occupy 7th place on the Ligue 1 ladder but they’ll no doubt have plans to collect all three points here this Sunday at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
Lyon also experienced something of a slow and disappointing start to this new Ligue 1 campaign as the visitors failed to win any of their opening three games of the new term, drawing with Brest and Clermont and also falling to a 3-0 defeat away at Angers.
However, Lyon have improved upon that shaky start with just one loss suffered in their subsequent six matches overall, which came in the form of a 2-1 loss away at runaway Ligue 1 leaders, PSG.
Three wins from their last five games have helped lift Lyon up the domestic top flight table though as the visitors have picked up important wins against Nantes, Strasbourg and Troyes, and this will give them belief that they can grab the maximum haul at Saint-Etienne on Sunday.
