Newcastle United
Anthony Gordon's missed Penalty ultimately cost Newcastle United two points in their last Premier League fixture and Eddie Howe will still be working on helping his squad find some consistency. After Thomas Tuchel was announced as the new England manager, Eddie Howe's focus can be entirely on improving the results and performances at St James' Park.
After the last set of results in the Premier League, Newcastle United dropped down into 7th place in the table. They are just 2 points behind Chelsea inside the top four and The Magpies will be looking to move above that rival by improving their 2-1-0 record at home.
Newcastle United may have only been beaten once this season in all competitions and have made it through to the League Cup Fourth Round, but the draw with Everton means they have failed to win any of their last 3 Premier League games. The 1-1 draw with Manchester City is the only fixture played at St James' Park that Newcastle United have failed to win this season, while they have been victorious in 7 of their last 10 here going back to the end of the last campaign.
Kieran Trippier is a doubt, while Marton Dubravka should be fit enough to earn a place on the bench. Both Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are hoping to return to give Newcastle United a real focal point to the attack.
Brighton
It was a tale of two halves in the last Premier League fixture before the October international break- Brighton were outplayed in the first half, but dominated the second as they fought back to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at the Amex Stadium. Fabian Hurzeler could not have asked for a much better start to his career as manager of the club, even if Brighton have another tough set of fixtures to come.
They are now 6th in the Premier League table and the manager has Brighton playing with confidence, while the fans will be hoping the team can challenge for a return to European Football. The Seagulls make the long journey to the North East with a 1-1-1 record away from home in the top flight.
Brighton had not won any of 4 Premier League games and then found themselves 0-2 down against Tottenham Hotspur before turning that game around and snapping their winless run. During that time, Brighton have found a way to progress to the League Cup Fourth Round. The side opened the season with a Premier League win at Everton and then followed up with a 1-1 draw at Arsenal, although Brighton were beaten 4-2 at Chelsea most recently.
James Milner, Simon Adingra, Georginio Rutter and Carlos Baleba are hoping to be available this weekend. Others like Matt O'Riley and Joao Pedro will have to wait a bit longer.
Head to Head
Brighton took four points from Newcastle United in the Premier League last season.
The game here ended 1-1 and prevented The Magpies from beating Brighton for a third time in a row at St James' Park.
Prediction
These two teams sit side by side in the Premier League table after seven League games have been played and both Brighton and Newcastle United will be targeting a return to European Football at the end of this campaign.
Last season they did both play in UEFA competitions, but that perhaps stretched the squads and this year the focus is only on the domestic competitions. Both teams have a League Cup Fourth Round fixture to play later this month with silverware something the fans will be dreaming about, and Eddie Howe and Fabian Hurzeler will be looking for some immediate momentum to be earned out of the October international break.
Brighton did win their last Premier League game, but they will need to start much better than they did in the eventual 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur. The second half performance was very encouraging, but the first half was not good enough and the it was more of the same in Brighton's last away Premier League game at Chelsea.
On that day, Brighton conceded four first half goals to Cole Palmer and Chelsea and they were beaten 4-2.
Fabian Hurzeler has given the squad some confidence, but his methods have left Brighton a little vulnerable at the back. The pace that Newcastle United have in the final third will certainly give them every chance of exploiting the high line and defensive mistakes Brighton continue to make, especially if Callum Wilson and/or Alexander Isak are available for selection.
The attacking side of their game makes Brighton very dangerous, even away from home, and Eddie Howe will know that his team have not been performing as well as the results have suggested. However, the fixtures have been tough for Newcastle United at home and they have played well enough against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City to believe they will be able to push through some tough moments to secure an important three points in this one.
After recent Brighton results, the layers are not taking any chances with their prices for seeing both teams score or for there being at least three goals shared out. You cannot argue with those outcomes, but Newcastle United's pace in the final third and a slightly more sure-footed defensive shape may be enough for the home team to secure an important three points.
