In a little under twelve months time, Canada will be hosting a World Cup Finals match for the first time, albeit in Toronto, and they will play two of the three Group matches in Vancouver.
That is a matter for June 2026 and the Gold Cup of 2025 is an opportunity for Canada to test their players in competitive action. They will open the tournament in Vancouver, and Canada will be looking to use this competition as a chance for real competitive action having reached the Nations League Semi Final in March and then winning the Third Place Play Off against the United States.
Canada will be playing a lot of friendly matches ahead of the World Cup Finals and they were able to beat Ukraine and then draw with Ivory Coast in a couple of those matches this month.
Ultimately the real test is only going to come in competitive action and Canada will be looking for a much deeper run at the Gold Cup in 2025 than they achieved in 2023. They were surprisingly beaten to top spot in that Group and that meant having to face the United States in the Quarter Final.
The defeat in 2023 was on Penalties, but Canada will be very disappointed if they were not to top this section and, in theory, earn a more comfortable first Knock Out tie. They can expect the likes of Honduras and El Salvador to be potentially awkward, but this is a proving ground for Canada and the players that do want to be leading the nation out in June 2026.
First up is Honduras who topped their last World Cup Qualifying Group to move into the final Round of those to be played later this year. This is a team that won all four matches played, although Honduras would have been significant favourites in a section that included Bermuda, Cuba, Cayman Islands and Antigua and Barbuda.
The last Nations League perhaps underlined the gap that Honduras will have to bridge when facing one of the co-hosts of the next World Cup Finals as they finished behind Jamaica in their Group. They were then beaten by Mexico in the Quarter Final, although Honduras did win the First Leg 2-0 before being thumped 4-0 in the Second Leg.
Merely getting out of the Group Stage at the Gold Cup has also proven challenging for Honduras in recent years- three of the last five editions of this tournament have seen the nation eliminated at the Group Stage, including two years ago.
It is Canada who have won two of the last three meetings between these nations.
Prediction
A slow start was made to the last Gold Cup and that proved costly for Canada in their eventual Quarter Final defeat to the United States.
Hosting this game in Vancouver should mean they are much more focused to avoid that slow start again.
Recent competitive action has been missing for Canada, but they should have enough to get the better of Honduras.
This is a nation who have struggled with the stronger ones in the Confederation, especially away from home, and Honduras could face the same here in Vancouver.
