Two nations that have met one another at senior level in big major international tournament matches are facing off in the 2025 Under 21 European Championship when Germany U21 and France U21 fight it out for a place in the Final.
Both teams were 3-2 winners in their respective Quarter Final ties, although Germany had to play Extra Time before finally seeing off Italy U21. They had been playing against nine men in regulation time, but Germany allowed an injury time equaliser and then needed until three minutes remaining before Penalties to score the decisive third goal.
It was difficult for France too, who had to fight back from behind twice against Denmark U21 and then needed two goals in two minutes late on to secure the 3-2 victory of their own.
France have earned some momentum with three wins in a row following the goalless draw with Portugal U21 to open this tournament- they have scored at least three goals in each of the victories produced over Georgia U21, Poland U21 and Denmark, but the French will be well aware that Germany pose arguably their toughest challenge so far in Slovakia.
Despite needing Extra Time in the Quarter Final, Germany will also be filled with confidence as they remain unbeaten at the Finals and have continued to score plenty of goals. They have scored at least twice in normal time in each of the four matches played at the tournament and Germany will be encouraged by some of the joy that teams have found when getting after France.
At the same time, France will feel their own attacking players can have a big impact in this game and especially after seeing what England U21 and Italy have been able to do against the Germans.
The most recent meeting between France and Germany at Under 21 level came in a friendly in November 2024 and that ended 2-2.
This is the first competitive fixture since 2008.
Prediction
Goals are expected in both Under 21 European Championship Semi Final ties to be played on Wednesday, but it is in the second of those matches where the recommendation is backing at least three to be shared out.
Both Germany U21 and France U21 will have a lot of respect for the attacking talents of the other, which could perhaps lead to some caution.
However, it will be pretty clear to each manager that they do not want to hold back the attacking players they are using and so it could develop into a high-scoring game, much as the friendly between them ended in November last year.
Goals have not been a problem for each team at the tournament in Slovakia, and neither has been particularly convincing at the back. Picking a winner is very tough, but we should see at least three goals shared out before the ninety minute whistle is blown.
