Reading return to League One action on Thursday night under the guidance of new manager Leam Richardson, who takes charge for the first time since replacing Noel Hunt at the end of October. The Royals will be eager to respond after a turbulent few weeks that culminated in FA Cup heartbreak at the weekend.
Richardson’s first outing in the dugout saw Reading bow out of the cup in dramatic fashion, losing 3-2 after extra time to National League outfit Carlisle United.
Despite that setback, Richardson’s main priority will be stabilising Reading’s league form and steering them clear of the relegation battle.
The Berkshire side currently sit 19th in the League One table with just 15 points picked up from 13 matches, though there have been signs of improvement as Reading have lost just once in their last five league games (W1 D3 L1). A victory here could move them five points clear of the drop zone and provide much-needed momentum.
Visitors Stevenage, meanwhile, have been one of the standout performers in the third tier this season. Under Alex Revell, Boro have made a flying start, collecting 26 points from 12 matches (W8 D2 L2) to sit 4th in the standings — just two points behind league leaders Stockport County with two games in hand.
Their form has dipped slightly in recent weeks following a 1-1 draw with Bradford City and a narrow loss to Lincoln City, but they remain one of the division’s most organised outfits.
Stevenage possess the best defensive record in League One, having conceded more than one goal in just two of their 12 matches, and have maintained strong away form throughout the campaign.
The Betting Verdict
Unbeaten in their last four meetings with Reading, Stevenage will fancy their chances of extending that run.
