These two teams met in the Group Stage of the 2025 Under 21 European Championships and it was Germany U21 who came out on top against England U21.
Both have since made pretty steady work of moving through the Knock Out Rounds and that means England are in a position to defend the title won at this level two years ago. That was the first time England had won the Under 21 European Championship since 1984, when they were also defending Champions, and Lee Carsley has been speaking glowingly about the squad.
Many will not be involved the next time around, including Semi Final hero Harvey Elliot, but the squad can leave a big mark by defending the title. Some will then be pushing to be included in the senior team's World Cup squad in twelve months time, but the focus has to be on the big Final to be played on Saturday.
Wins over Spain U21 and Netherlands U21 have been behind impressive performances- England were underdogs in the Quarter Final, but deserving winners, and restricted Netherlands to few efforts in the Semi Final win as they progressed through the draw.
However, this is perhaps the toughest challenge that the England squad will face and they will already have seen how dangerous Germany can be when losing to this team 2-1 in the Group Stage. That meant finishing a distant 5 points behind the Germans, who have since beaten Italy U21 and France U21 as they continue to rack up the goals.
There may have been some concern with Germany having to play Extra Time in the Quarter Final win over Italy, but they erased those in the impressive 3-0 win over France. It has pushed their unbeaten run to 20 games at this level, during which time they have won 17 times, while Germany have really impressed in the final third with at least two goals scored in each fixture played in Slovakia.
They have even managed to breach this tough England defence twice and Germany will take some huge belief out of the Group Stage win.
Prior to that fixture, England had beaten Germany twice in a row, which includes in the Group Stage at the 2023 Under 21 European Championship.
Prediction
This is the kind of quality looking Final that is fitting for the 2025 Under 21 European Championship.
Both England U21 and Germany U21 will have plenty of confidence from the way they have performed in the tournament in general, but especially in the Knock Out Rounds of the competition. The two teams are scoring goals and overpowering opponents, but both will agree that the opponent is perhaps tougher than any they have beaten so far in those Knock Out ties.
Germany's win over England in the Group Stage feels important.
It just showed a team that is full of belief and who have long been thinking about making up for the poor showing at the 2023 tournament. The Germans have won two of the last four editions and in a game where the layers are struggling to separate the two, the edge has to be with the higher-scoring capabilities of Germany to come through.
Backing them on the Asian Handicap at least returns the stake in the event of a draw and that looks the best way to get behind Germany to end England's hold of the trophy.
