Real Betis picked up a point in last weekend’s opening fixture of this new La Liga season away from home at Elche but the hosts will now be looking to go one step better by taking all three points in this opening home game of the new campaign against Alaves at their Benito Villamarin on Friday night.
The upcoming hosts achieved a 6th place finish at the end of last season’s La Liga campaign which earned them an automatic spot in the group stage of this season’s Europa League as they look to shrug off the disappointment of a 4-1 loss to Chelsea in the final of the Conference League back in May.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side produced an inconsistent looking pre-season as the hosts suffered losses at the hands of Malaga and Como but had earlier posted wins against Cordoba and English Premier League side Sunderland.
Alaves by contrast finished last season in the bottom half of the La Liga table as the visitors ended up in 15th place in the Spanish top flight ladder but the visitors will have been encouraged with their unbeaten sequence of four games towards the end of the season.
Victories over Villarreal and Real Valladolid along with points gained via draws with Las Palmas and Osasuna along with last weekend’s 2-1 home win against Levante on the opening day of the new La Liga season will give Eduardo Coudet’s side reason to feel fairly confident about their chances on Friday night.
However, Alaves slipped to nine defeats in their 19 away games last season but they did manage to inflict a 3-1 loss upon their upcoming hosts in their previous visit to Benito Villamarin back in January of last term.
