Middlesbrough will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the Championship season when they welcome Ipswich Town to the Riverside Stadium on Friday night.
Boro’s unbeaten start came to an end with a narrow 1-0 reverse away at Portsmouth last time out, and Rob Edwards’ men will be eager to respond in front of their home supporters.
The hosts had previously enjoyed a strong opening to the campaign, recording five wins and three draws from their first eight matches under Edwards, who is no stranger to Championship success having guided Luton Town to promotion in 2023.
However, goals have been somewhat scarce on Teesside so far this season, with three of Middlesbrough’s four home fixtures producing Under 2.5 goals. Boro have scored four and conceded just once in those outings, highlighting their solid defensive structure but occasional lack of attacking fluency.
Ipswich Town, meanwhile, arrive on the back of an encouraging five-game unbeaten run as Kieran McKenna’s side begin to rediscover the rhythm that took them to the Premier League just over a year ago.
After a slow start which saw them fail to win any of their opening four matches, the Tractor Boys have since put together a string of positive results, including victories over Sheffield United, Portsmouth and fierce East Anglian rivals Norwich City.
That said, away form remains a concern for the visitors. Ipswich have yet to claim their first league win on the road this season, with all three of their away fixtures so far producing Under 2.5 goals.
McKenna’s men have shown improved resilience, but they will need to find an extra gear if they are to break down a disciplined Middlesbrough outfit at the Riverside.
The Betting Verdict
Seven out of the last eight meetings between these two clubs have resulted in Under 2.5 goals.
