Everton
There has been plenty to like about Everton this season, but David Moyes is still going to be frustrated about the lack of consistency being produced. He has spoken about this Football Club being one that should be challenging for a place in UEFA competition, and there is a real opportunity for a number of clubs to achieve that in the Premier League, but that will need a string of positive results to be put together.
After eight games, Everton have a 3-2-3 record with 9 goals scored and conceded and that record feels like it sums up the inconsistency mentioned. The Toffees are 12th in the Premier League table and the best results have come at Hill Dickson Stadium where Everton have a 2-2-0 record in the top flight.
Everton were beaten at Manchester City last weekend and that means they have won 1 of their last 6 games in all competitions, while also being dumped out of the League Cup to the frustration of the supporters. The late show in the last home Premier League game saw Everton come from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 here and that also ended a sequence of 2 consecutive home draws.
Jarrad Branthwaite has had a setback with his injury and he is expected to miss the remainder of the calendar year, which is not good news in a World Cup season. Both Nathan Patterson and Jack Grealish should be involved this weekend with the latter returning after being ineligible to face his parent club last time out.
Tottenham Hotspur
Away clean sheets in the Champions League rarely come easily and Tottenham Hotspur fans have just spent a whole season watching the team concede goals for fun under Ange Postecoglou. With that in mind, the goalless draw in Monaco on Wednesday will be seen as a success, although Thomas Frank is going to be well aware that the performances have to be vastly improved if his team are going to have a strong campaign in his first season at the helm.
Only poor finishing prevented Monaco from winning that Champions League game during the week and Tottenham Hotspur have just been struggling for consistency in the final third. That was the issue last Sunday when losing to Aston Villa, a result that has dropped Tottenham Hotspur into 6th place in the Premier League table. Spurs play last this weekend so the table could very different at kick off with the team looking to improve the 3-1-0 away record in the top flight.
Tottenham Hotspur have earned the majority of their Premier League points away from home this season, but they will be making the journey to Merseyside having won 1 of the last 5 games played in all competitions. The final result in Monaco on Wednesday also means Tottenham Hotspur have drawn 3 of their last 4 away games in all competitions, although the exception is the 1-2 win at Leeds United in the last away Premier League game played.
Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie have joined a long list of absentees within the Tottenham Hotspur squad, although Thomas Frank will be hoping the majority are going to be able to return to action either side of the November international break.
Head to Head
Both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur beat the other at home in the Premier League last season.
Everton are unbeaten in the last 7 games hosted against this opponent as they prepare to face Spurs at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time.
Prediction
While the results have remained pretty steady, it is telling that the layers have placed Tottenham Hotspur as the underdog in this Premier League game this weekend.
The underlying numbers have long suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are not playing nearly as well as some may think and this is a team struggling in the final third.
Credit has to be given to Thomas Frank for helping to organise them much better than they had been under Ange Postecoglou, but Spurs were incredibly fortunate to escape Monaco with a draw. It was a level of performance that will lead to a lot more defeats than positive results and the team remain a work in progress.
Of course you cannot ignore the fact that Spurs have had some of the best results away from home- this is where Frank's set up can work best with the onus on the host to get forward, although it remains concerning that both Leeds United and Monaco created the chances that they did.
Everton have been tough in their new Hill Dickinson Stadium home and they showed the battling qualities in coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace most recently. David Moyes will have been working hard with his team, while Tottenham Hotspur have been travelling in Europe, and Everton will have Jack Grealish back to offer them a spark in the final third.
However, this is not a team playing with a lot of consistency in the attacking areas mainly down to a struggling Number 9. Beto and Thierno Barry are working hard, but things are not quite sitting for either and it does mean Everton are not scoring as many goals as they perhaps should be.
Recent fixtures between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have tended to be very high-scoring, but this one feels different.
Backing less than three goals to be shared out can be dangerous- last week it did not work in the Spurs game despite the fact that both the host and Aston Villa created very little in terms of big openings, but had players score special goals.
It would also be going against the recent trend in this fixture, but both defences will feel they can largely contain what the other is going to bring to the pitch. The edge has to be with Everton considering the chances they have continued to create, and how Tottenham Hotspur have defended in the last couple of away games, but David Moyes' team have lacked real composure in those positions.
Tottenham Hotspur have players that can create a chance out of nothing, but everything is pointing to a low-scoring fixture in this one.
